They're baaaaaaaaaaaaacckkkkk!!! Rocky Coast Radio Theatre returns with yet another copious cornucopia of classic concoctions, crafted and compiled for the captive congregation (gotta love that thesaurus!). Nightmares on Congress Street, Part V offers dramatized adaptations (complete with music and sound effects) of chilling stories penned by Edgar Allan Poe, Hugh B. Cave, and H.P. Lovecraft, as well as a few additional treats.

    Dave says: "Excellent"
    "Simply the best!"
    Overall

I wrote a rave review for Part IV, and it was that purchase that prompted me to get Part V. I am so glad I did. It was even better! There's one somewhat weak adaptation of a Poe piece (Tell-Tale Heart). It works, but... ennnnhhhh. Retroactive Terror is a biting satirical piece, which would make many a conservative pale. Ray Bradbury's short story, The Wind, is an amazing tribute to his writing prowess. The Door Below is deliciously creepy, and HP Lovecraft's Testimony Of Randolph Carter is the scariest and most atmospheric audio theatre I have ever heard. And I've listened to a lot! I can hardly wait for Part VI!!! In the meantime, I'll just relisten to IV & V.

At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, the convicted killers on E Block await their turn to walk the Green Mile and keep a date with the electric chair. Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working as a guard on the Mile, but he's never met anyone like John Coffey.

Frank Muller's performance is so magnificent, it's a whole different level of story-telling.!

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He breathed life into it! Better than the movie. Plus there are far more details in the book than can be brought into a film.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Edoardo Ballerini totally invests himself in the material he reads, making one feel as though he's experiencing everything he relates. There's a freshness and honesty to his narration rarely found in others out there. Bravo!

It looked like another ordinary day in Los Angeles. Then night came...Evil as old as the centuries has descended upon the City of Angels - it comes as a kiss from the terrifying but seductive immortals. Slowly at first, then by the legions, the ravenous undead choke Los Angeles with bloodthirsty determination - and the hordes of monstrous victims steadily mount each night.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. The story's captivating enough, even with huge gaping holes throughout. But it's Ray Porter that lifts it from the mundane to a captivating listen.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

    The narration!

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

    Everything. His characterizations are top-notch.

Experience Ender’s Game as you’ve never heard it before! With an all-new, original script written by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game Alive is a full-cast audio drama that reimagines the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning classic.

What would have made Ender's Game Alive: The Full Cast Audioplay better?

Better production values. I thought I was getting an audio drama, but this was more of a multi-voiced performance with little to no sound effects or music. Really dry and bland.

Would you be willing to try another one of Full Cast Recording’s performances?

It'd have to be from a different production company.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ender's Game Alive: The Full Cast Audioplay?

Pretty much all of it, recasting it and putting in a movie soundtrack.

    Any additional comments?

Yawn! I couldn't even finish it. 30 minutes tops was what I endured.

  • The Starling Project: An Audible Drama

An aborted raid targeting a major arms dealer. A hostage standoff at a bank that may not be what it seems. A plot to spring a former African dictator from prison. What is the threat that connects them all? And just who is the mysterious mastermind, The Starling? From Mexico to Washington - from London to Marseille to Prague - war crimes investigator Harold Middleton and his team of Volunteers risk their lives to follow the trail of clues. But how can they stop The Starling - when he always seems one step ahead?

Would you listen to The Starling Project again? Why?

Absolutely. The production values are incredible. I listened with headphones and was immediately transported to a mind-movie. There are also so many twists and turns, it definitely warrants a second, if not third, listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mustapha and Devon. They were the quintessential buddy pair, with a lot of light humor and tension.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The storyline is fairly decent, with a dynamite opening and a number of false trails that keep you guessing and scratching your head. It maddeningly ends without the villain being caught (not a spoiler), inviting the hope of a sequel.

    Any additional comments?

I listen to a lot of audio drama, mainly British (Perfectly Normal, Crazy Dog, BBC) because Americans seem to have lost the ability to create in this medium. But this production has canceled those doubts, and I look forward to more Audible Dramas!

  • Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Eluding the law has always been high on Dortmunder's list. But getting caught red-handed is inevitable in his next caper, when a TV producer convinces this thief and his merry gang to star in a reality show that captures their next score. The producer even guarantees to keep the show from being used as evidence against them. They're dubious at first, but the pay's good, so they sign on.

Dufris and Westlake - what a pair.

The story is already clever and hilarious, and Dufris' narration ensures it remains as such. The characters are all so clearly defined by a vocal maestro.

All it takes is a few underhanded moves by a tough ex-cop named Eppick to pull thief John Dortmunder into a game he never wanted to play. With no choice, he sets out on a perilous treasure hunt for a long-lost gold and jewel-studded chess set once intended as a birthday gift for the last Romanov czar. Success is not inevitable with Dortmunder leading the attack, but he's nothing if not persistent, and some gambit or other might just stumble into a winning move.

Fleeing the respectable society that wants to "sivilize" him, Huck Finn shoves off with Jim on a rhapsodic raft journey down the Mississippi River. The two bind themselves to one another, becoming intimate friends and agreeing "there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft".

What a tour de force! I am on my SECOND listening to this marvelous rendition of an American classic. Dufris is a wonder. One could almost swear that this a multi-voiced production. From the exuberant and generous-spirited Huck to the noble and wise Jim to that dastardly and incorrigible duo, the duke and the dauphin, a world of colorful and entertaining characters is created by a most gifted narrator.
