I have listened to this story three times over the past year and love it every time!!
The narrator is the so great; all of his voices are spot on. Mr. Keating has the ability to give subtle nuance to different characters; even his female voices sound right, somehow.
But the story is a terrific mix of history and battle theory, study on archery, small town boy against the world overcomes all with a bit of romance. I can't fault it - save that I wanted it to be three times longer!
If you are bothered by rough language or gory details, this book might not be for you. If you appreciate a straight-forward, well written, well narrated historical fiction, download away!
I have read (the old-fashion way) a few Nora Roberts books in the past and found them entertaining enough...this book was painful to listen to. Like other reviews, I found the narrator's version of children's voices downright awful, the women mostly bad and even some of the male voice silly. The story itself was fine, but slow going. The best part of this romance was the transformation of the inn...
I like mysteries...I like needle work...I even like Minnesota, but I did not feel like the narrator made the story come together. I did not respond well to the narrator's stilted sort of delivery, so I will not likely choose to follow this series.
Like many others, I was introduced to Brother Cadfael through Masterpiece Mystery, and though it is hard to get the image of Derek Jacobi out of my mind when I am listening to these stories, Patrick Tull does an exceptional job narrating the story. For me, these stories are a nice blend of history and mystery. Who could ask for more?
I downloaded this book because it was written by Jean Plaidy and read by Davina Porter. I have read something near 15 of Plaidy's books about Queens and listened to as many or more books narrated by Davina Porter, so I had high expectations for this one. The narrator is excellent, as expected, but the story was nothing like those I am used to under the pen name of Jean Plaidy. This was 20% history, 20% misc. story, 60% sappy romance...not the balance I am looking for, but if you like historical romances you might be quite satisfied.
