On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me—well, actually, my true love, Darcy O’Mara, is spending a feliz navidad tramping around South America. Meanwhile, Mummy is holed up in a tiny village called Tiddleton-under-Lovey with that droll Noel Coward! And I’m snowed in at Castle Rannoch with my bumbling brother, Binky, and sourpuss sister-in-law, Fig.

Would you try another book from Rhys Bowen and/or Katherine Kellgren?

I don't think so...the narrator's voice wasn't as soothing as I prefer, and the story was a bit dry.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    It was worth the wait!

Did Katherine Kellgren do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, she was very good at all the accents and age differences.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    I'd rent the DVD.

  • The Opal Deception: Artemis Fowl, Book 4

After his last run-in with the fairies, Artemis Fowl had his mind wiped of his memories of the world below ground. Any goodness he had grudgingly learned is now gone, and the young genius has reverted to his criminal lifestyle.

    "Narrator and story equally superb!"

Would you listen to The Opal Deception again? Why?

Yes. The narrator is so entrancing and the story is so intricate. It's like Harry Potter (I am a faithful fan) with more humor and violence. In a good way, of course.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Opal Deception?

Well, anytime Mulch's bumflap is mentioned, I giggle, and I am over 50 years old...
But maybe it was Artemis's plan to foil Opal's plan while moving at incredible speed, with all those layers of deceit that had to work or else...

What does Nathaniel Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does all the accents and personalities so well, I just can't get enough of him. If only I wasn't already married.... In fact, I listen to various Artemis Fowl books several times. I never tire of the voices or stories.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

An incredible mix of courage, genius, and various types of interesting beings...held together by magic, loyalty and high tech gadgets!

    Any additional comments?

Like I said, I am over 50 and the main character in this series is just becoming a teenager, yet the story still thrills me.

  • Circles & Squares

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 6 mins)

    • Narrated By Gordon Griffin

    Story

Tim Simpson is busy tracking down paintings by Sir William Nicholson and his "abstract" son, Ben Nicholson, for White's Art Fund, as well as looking into an investment in a film and photographic archive for his bosses. So it comes as a shock when he is accused of murder. The victim, a dubious lady calling herself Bassington, had Tim's name in her diary, and Tim's old rugby-playing friend, Chief Inspector Nobby Roberts of Scotland Yard, is irritatingly insistent.

What disappointed you about Circles & Squares?

The story was too complex and nothing caught my attention for the first hour...so I quit.

What could John Malcolm have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I have a feeling this is just one of those books you need to read in your head

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He didn't detract really. The story and details were just to complicated to keep my attention.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I didn't listen to enough to spark any emotions...

  • Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 13 mins)

In this wickedly honest new work, Chelsea Handler casts the net wider with even funnier results, recalling the most noteworthy highs and lows of her life to date - including her efforts to diversify by dating red-haired men, her obsession with midgets, and the dog-sitting interlude in which her boyfriend became overly familiar with a Peekapoo.

    Teddy says: "Just Plain FUNNYYYY!!!!!!!!!"

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I have a feeling this would have been funnier if I had read it myself, not listened to the performer.

What could Chelsea Handler have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not sound so angry during the entire performance.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Chelsea Handler?

Someone lighter, although I don't know any American performers off hand. It needs someone who can allow the listener to appreciate the humor in Chelsea's rocky life.

Did Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea inspire you to do anything?

Not drink too much vodka. Be afraid of driving in the US. Appreciate the good points in others...

    Any additional comments?

I have lived in Japan for 17 years. I love listening to Audible recordings while cooking and cleaning. I was expecting a hilarious story to get me in a good mood (and I need the English language input!) I am afraid this American sarcasm just ended up sounding too darn angry and made me cringe.
