  • Story of O

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Pauline Reage
    • Narrated By Käthe Mazur

O is a young, beautiful fashion photographer in Paris. One day her lover, René, takes her to a château, where she is enslaved, with René's approval, and systematically sexually assaulted by various other men. Later, René turns O over to Sir Stephen, an English friend who intensifies the brutality. But the final humiliation is yet to come.

Justagirl says: "This is not 50 Shades"
"Changed my view on a lot of things"
Would you listen to Story of O again? Why?

Yes, I will wait at least a year because I became outraged listening to the level of inhumanity one woman would endure in the name of "love". To think these dehumanizingactivities may go on in the world is truly disturbing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Story of O?

When O has a chance to get away from the abusive behavior she chose to stay.

What does Käthe Mazur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ms. Mazur reads with a slow steady pace. It allows the listener to really absorb what is happening and the mind blowing way in which this woman accepts her fate and how in the end she is discarded like a piece of garbage.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did. I was shocked then angry and at the end very, very sad. I wanted to shake O awake until I realized she had become numb from her mistreatment and would have enjoyed my actions and nothing would change.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend this book to any reader that enjoyed the Shades of Gray trilogy. While I did not read the series I would hope that listeners of this story would understand that we demoralize our selves by making these abusive behaviors entertainment. the Story of O was an education.
I downloaded the book because J.K. Rowling refused to read the Shades of Gray series
    after reading this one.

  • Invisible Man: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Ralph Ellison
    • Narrated By Joe Morton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of 20th-century African-American life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching - yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places.

Robert says: "You've been waiting, buy it, you won't be sorry..."
"Joe Morton brings a classic to Life"

I barely remember reading this book back in school. Listening to Joe Morton's performance I can't get certain portions of it out of my head.
This story, the coming of age of a young African American male in American society could be anyone of us. Because as we move through life we all come to terms with what it means to be visible. It all in the question. Did I make a difference? Thanks Ralph!

  • Departure

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By A.G. Riddle
    • Narrated By Nicola Barber, Scott Aiello
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Harper Lane has problems. In a few hours, she'll have to make a decision that will change her life forever. But when her flight from New York to London crash lands in the English countryside, she discovers that she's made of tougher stuff than she ever imagined. As Harper and the survivors of Flight 305 struggle to stay alive in the aftermath of the crash, they soon realize this world is very different from the one they left. Their lives are connected, and some believe they've been brought here for a reason.

Matthew says: "The start of a new series I suspect.."
"Time Traveling Sci-Fi Fans will love it!"

This novel has more twist and turns than most. To listen to the same events experienced by two different characters was enjoyable. Had to adjust to female narrator because pitch and accent seemed wrong at first, but it grew on me the more I listened.
Gotta say, I can usually predict actions and outcomes in most stories but this one left me guessing up to about the last 20 minutes or so. Makes me wonder when the rest of the series is coming out. Can't wait.

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Jonathan Maberry
    • Narrated By Ray Porter

When Joe Ledger and Echo Team rescue a group of American college kids held hostage in Iran, the Iranian government then asks them to help find six nuclear bombs planted in the Mideast oil fields. Mel says: "Hang On To Your Shorts!"
"Joe Ledger and company save the world again!"

Jonathan Mayberry does not disappoint and Ray Porter does the narration with style Who ra! Joe and company take on terrorist that are part of an agreement made before modern times.
This story has the historical elements of Da Vinci Code and dark forces of Twilight series. Buckle up for a wild ride.

  • No One Would Listen: A True Financial Thriller

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs)
    • By Harry Markopolos
    • Narrated By Scott Brick, Harry Markopolos, Frank Casey, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team - affectionately called "the Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself - uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

    Brendan says: "Shocking, terrific"
What did you like about this audiobook?

The methodical way in which the author gathered his evidence. I learned a great deal about the financial systems and how they could be corrupted. Markopolos and his team took on something that was so big so complex and dangerous for so long....

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

When Markopolos explained how he and his team cracked the case by following the money. Sounds simple....

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

When he found out Bernie Madoff had been stopped. All the people who called to tell him all his hard work had finally paid off. And how much money and lives that could have been saved if someone would have listened and acted sooner.

  • Righteous Indignation: Excuse Me While I Save the World

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Andrew Breitbart
    • Narrated By Jeremy Guskin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Known for his network of conservative websites that draws millions of readers everyday, Andrew Breitbart has one main goal: to make sure the "liberally biased" major news outlets in this country cover all aspects of a story fairly. Breitbart is convinced that too many national stories are slanted by the news media in an unfair way. In Righteous Indignation, Breitbart talks about the key issues that Americans face, how he has aligned himself with the Tea Party, and how one needs to deal with the liberal news world head on.

    Larry says: "Very insightful!"
    "Learned Much from this listen"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I have too several people.

What did you like best about this story?

That we having an almost similar educational experience in New Orleans around the same time.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Guskin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not had the pleasure.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

That he knew a great deal about himself and the motivations of people around him.

    Any additional comments?

Although I enjoyed this book I have not been made completely drunk by the Tea Party kool-aide. I now know from where they get some of their ideas and what the plan is to change conservative views in the eyes of the American populace. I sleep better at night having listened to this book.
Also I was stunned to learn the author passed away this year.

  • The Modern Scholar: He Said/She Said: Women, Men and Language

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Deborah Tannen
    • Narrated By Deborah Tannen

"My goal in this series, in addition to illuminating the patterns of women's and men's uses of language, is to enhance understanding of how language works in everyday life. I am told by students who have taken my courses that this understanding helps them in their everyday lives, as every aspect of our lives involves talking to people of the other sex - in our personal relationships, our families, at work, and in trying to get just about anything done."

Douglas says: "I Have Taught The Work Of Deborah Tannen..."
    "Learned something new"
Where does The Modern Scholar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It stacks up pretty high in the non-fiction genre.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

How certain things regarding genders do not change no matter what a parent does. Basically how society impacts.

What about Deborah Tannen’s performance did you like?

I thought the lecture format was interesting way to deliver this information. The question and answer period at the end of each section sometimes answered a question I was also thinking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

  • The Thank You Economy

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Gary Vaynerchuk
    • Narrated By Gary Vaynerchuk
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Thank You Economy is about something big, something greater than any single revolutionary platform. It isn't some abstract concept or wacky business strategy—it's real, and every one of us is doing business in it every day, whether we choose to recognize it or not. It's the way we communicate, the way we buy and sell, the way businesses and consumers interact online and offline.

Scott says: "Gary is fun, but the book is a bit shallow"
    "Thanks but no thanks"
What did you like best about The Thank You Economy? What did you like least?

Thought there was some useful stuff about being innovative. Had to work hard to keep listening because he kept going off script and telling us so. It was distracting.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have read it as written and provided updates/new references at the end of each chapter or end of the book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was very loud and over the top. Nonstop

Was The Thank You Economy worth the listening time?

    Not really
