Jane Sagan: Soldier. Killer. Lover. Dreamer. In John Scalzi's best-selling Old Man's War series of science-fiction novels, we see this warrior woman as the other characters see her - silent and strong, from the outside. But now The Sagan Diary shows us Sagan from another point of view: her own, as she prepares to leave military life and join her new husband and adopted daughter on a colony world.

This short story is amazing. The words flow with poetic grace and touch the heart and mind.
I think Scalzi is ever bit as good as Robert Heinlen at his best!
I can't wait to listen to the Ghost Brigades.

Sadie Hutchins loves her job at the Kentucky Tourism Commission. Not only could her co-workers double as the cast of Parks and Recreation, but she loves finding the unusual sites, hidden gems, and just-plain-odd tourist attractions of her home state. She’s a shoo-in for the director’s job when her boss retires at the end of the year…until hotshot Josh Vaughn shows up to challenge her for the position. Josh is all sophisticated polish while Sadie’s country comfort, and the two have very different ideas of what makes a good campaign.

He never thought he would meet the girl of his dreams, Lena Duchannes, who unveiled a secretive, powerful, and cursed side of Gatlin, hidden in plain sight. It was sad and bitter-sweet at times; but the authors really wrapped up the story in a good way. Now, if you'll just prevent Hollywood screenwriters from turning the movie sequels into their personal prejudice rants (the way they did Beautiful Creatures), I'd be very grateful.

The jacket cover of the book was very confusingly written (it made the relationships sound very twisted and unappealing), so I held off on purchasing it for quite some time. But I eventually rented the movie, and liked it so much that I had to buy the book. I was very pleased with the story and Stephanie Meyer's ability to make love something worth dying for.

Halfway through the first story, I found myself yelling at the windshield "No, I don't CARE how Cascadia works!" The endless droning about an extremely unrealistic blend of ultra-modern technology and primitive lifestyle made me want to throw my ipod out the window. Combining that with unlikeable characters and a slow plot was cruel and unusual auditory punishment.
Sorry, but someone has to say it.

  • Good Book: Things I Learned When I Read Every Single Word of the Bible

Good Book is what happens when a regular guy actually reads the book on which his religion, his culture, and his world are based. Along the way, he grapples with the most profound theological questions: Does God prefer obedience or good deeds? And the most unexpected ones: Why are so many women in the Bible prostitutes? Why does God love bald men so much? Is Samson really that stupid? Good Book is an irreverent, enthralling journey through the world's most important work of literature.

David Plotz is a great example of someone who is well-educated, but completely without understanding. He makes no attempt, but just gives as sarcastic a reading as is humanly possible.
