The first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor has become an instant American icon. Now, with a candor and intimacy never undertaken by a sitting Justice, she recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench, a journey that offers an inspiring testament to her own extraordinary determination and the power of believing in oneself.

Where does My Beloved World rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I listened to "My Beloved World" on a long road trip and back. This book totally captivated my attention. I loved hearing about Sonia Sotomayor's childhood in New York and they way she overcame many obstacles in her life. Also diabetic, I found her story of how she learned to give herself insulin shots at age eight inspiring. Her matter-of-fact attitude has helped me overcome much of the guilt associated with the disease. I also appreciated her attitude that she could learn anything once she put her mind to it. I heard Sonia Sotomayor on an interview about the book and was called to find it to read it. Rita Moreno's reading is really clear and invigorating. I loved the book and was sorry when it ended.

Which character – as performed by Rita Moreno – was your favorite?

Sonia's character as the main character was the best. Rita Moreno spoke with a clear and effortless voice. I felt that Sonia's writing was truthful and without guile.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it's a long book, but it will hold your attention in a long drive.

As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.

What made the experience of listening to Orphan Train the most enjoyable?

Bouncing between time periods, we follow the story of two orphans who must find their way in a world that wants to mold them to fit into boxes that society views as their roles. Through their two stories we come to see that while society has changed, certain fundamental truths about how people view the most vunerable among us has not. I love stories about young women with spirit and depth and both of the main characters have both. As they deal with what the world dishes out to them, we find that what sustains them changes them.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked when Vivian realized that all of the bad things that happened to her (and there were ALOT of them) were actually the things that led her to the good things and that she was grateful for everything.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was when Vivian realized the handsome stranger was actually a young boy she met on the Orphan Train many years earlier.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I listened to this book constantly and found myself sitting in the car to finish a section. It was a compelling book with many emotional scenes.

Professor Anne Waverly teaches religious studies at a respected university. Middle-aged and slightly lame, she spends her days in lecture halls and offices. But occasionally, she works for the FBI. As Ana Wakefield, an eager seeker of higher truths, she infiltrates cults. Now, leaving the security of academia, she is on her way to Arizona in a battered VW bus.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Darker Place to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but the audible version is very well done.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is definitely well written. I love the twists and turns and thought processes when you are pretending to be someone that you are not and being found out could be fatal.

What does Alyssa Bresnahan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Alyssa Bresnahan has a great, gentle voice with a hidden strenghth. I felt this went well with the first person perspective of this book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book was very scary, but then I am very interested in cults and the way that they operate.

    Any additional comments?

I can't believe I waited to read to this book, it's a real draw!

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Would you listen to Wild again? Why?

probably not, but enjoyed the read.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked her problem solving skills when confronted with adversity. I also liked the fact that she dives into any situation, generally not prepared, but muddles through, and isn't that what most of us do?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, in fact, I had a hard time getting through the first part of the book, especially the part about her mother dying and subsequent hard times. I was listening to this book in the car with my husband and we both had a difficult time reliving her problems. Later, when traveling alone, I went back to this book and made it out to the trail. I found that part of the book really fun.
