  • Soulless: An Alexia Tarabotti Novel

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

    "Brilliant!"
    Overall

Gail Carriger's debut of the parasol protectorate is just plain brilliant. Set in an alternative Victorian England where werewolves, vampires, and ghosts are productive members of society, Soulless takes the listener on a witty and eccentric mystery ride. While we enjoy a satiric portrayal of social graces in the spirit of Jane Austin, we are entertained by fantastical science in the spirit of Jules Verne. Emily Gray is an excellent choice in narrators for this farce fusion. You will like this book. I can't wait for the other books in this series to make it to Audible.

"My name's Bonnie Torres. Recent college grad, magic user, and severely unemployed. Until I got a call out of nowhere to interview for a job I hadn't applied for. It smelled fishy, but the brutal truth was I needed the work - so off I went. Two days later I'm a PUPI (Private, Unaffiliated, Paranormal Investigator) - me and Nick, Sharon, Nifty, and Pietr. Five 20-somethings, thrown into an entirely new career in forensic magic. The first job we get is a doozy. Worse, there are high-profile people who want us to close up shop and go away."

Laura Anne Gilman has created a wonderful new leading lady, Bonnie Torres. While most readers/listeners will not be able to relate to her affluence, everyone can relate to her immaturity and free acceptance of love in all its glorious shapes, colors, and smells. Bonnie is truly a flawed heroine that we can all enthusiastically support. Romy Nordlinger does a great job bringing this novel to life.

For nearly 2,000 years, only one Druid has walked the Earth - Atticus O’Sullivan, the Iron Druid, whose sharp wit and sharp sword have kept him alive as he’s been pursued by a pantheon of hostile deities. Now he’s got company. Atticus’ apprentice, Granuaile, is at last a full Druid herself. What’s more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid long ago frozen in time, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy. And Owen has some catching up to do.

This is a great series, and Luke Daniels does a wonderful job bring the stories to life, but this book has a different format from the others. In this book, we get points of view (POVs) from more characters than just Atticus. I didn't care for the change in POVs. I am not sure if my dislike is because the change in POVs was so unexpected that I was unable to adapt to it or if it actually lessened the quality of the story. It was almost as if Hearne was going for A Song of Ice and Fire format but didn't capture the essence of smooth POV transitions completely. I would not suggest skipping this installment as I did for the novella but be warned about the new format. Oberon is back and still the best canine character out there. It is almost always worth the read/listen just to find out what Oberon is going to say next.

Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan knows magic - earth, ley line, even the forbidden demon magic - and that knowledge has saved her life more than once. But now something - or someone - is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong while living vampires attack humans and Inderlanders alike. The pressures build when the city is quarantined to contain the unreliable magic, and Rachel must stop the attacks before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war.

Rachel and crew are back to save the world again. Even though this is the 12th book in a series, it doesn't have an overdone feeling. Instead, Kim Harrison finds ways to make the plot seem new each time while developing the main characters in a manner that seems believable. Taken together, these elements leave the reader/listener feeling like he/she is curling up to check in on the exciting adventures of some old friends. The only part of the world Kim Harrison has built that sometimes forces a disconnection between the reader/listener and the story is as follows: Kim Harrison sometimes forgets to explain specifics about the Midwest; so, if the reader/listener isn't from the Midwest, he/she may get a little confused. An example from this book is that Kim Harrison forgets to explain to the reader/listener just how close Cincinnati is to Columbus. Also, Marguerite Gavin is one of my favorite narrators. Thanks to the publisher for keeping her employed.

Being a goddess is a lot less fun than you might think. Especially when you're only a half goddess, you only found out about it recently, and you still don't know what you're doing half the time. And when you've just used your not-so-reliable powers to burglarize the booby-trapped office of a vampire mob boss. Yeah, that part sucks. But that's just the tip of the iceberg for Cassandra Palmer, aka the Pythia, the freshly minted chief seer of the supernatural world.

I can't believe I missed the release of this book. Luckily, I have caught up! Cassie blunders around again and FINALLY starts to understand that she is an adult and in control of her own powers and actions and only accountable to her own ethics and morality. Why does she waste any time with the vampires? Pritikin is awesome. I can't wait for the next book.

I was really excited when the authors of the Kate Daniels series started a new project. This is a fun read, and if you like Kate Daniels and want to listen to something almost exactly the same, you will enjoy this book. I was a little disappointed, because it was more of the same domineering men and spirited women clash in a rural, paranormal fantasy. I was hoping for something new.

Joanne Walker has survived an encounter with the Master at great personal cost, but now her father is missing - stolen from the timeline. She must finally return to North Carolina to find him - and to meet Aidan, the son she left behind long ago. That would be enough for any shaman to face, but Joanne's beloved Appalachians are being torn apart by an evil reaching forward from the distant past. Anything that gets in its way becomes tainted - or worse. And Aidan has gotten in the way.

The Walker Papers are back (FINALLY). Even though it was a long wait, it was worth it. C. E. Murphy delivers an action-packed and hilarious emotional roller coaster through time. Joanne goes back home and ends up saving the world (again). This is a great listen, and Gabra Zackman is brilliant, as always.

He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long.

This really is a must listen series. The series never gets old even if you binge listen to three books in a row. In this installment, the summer and winter ladies are out to save the world--or are they? Harry reunites with his posse and saves the world while introducing us to new foe. James Marsters rocks as always. Thank goodness he is back.

Usually, it’s something awful. He doesn’t know the half of it… Mab has just traded Harry’s skills to pay off one of her debts. And now he must help a group of supernatural villains - led by one of Harry’s most dreaded and despised enemies, Nicodemus Archleone - to break into the highest-security vault in town, so that they can then access the highest-security vault in the Nevernever.

The Dresden series is a wonderful series. It is well written, well thought out, and interesting. Even though Jim Butcher has written 15 books in this series since 2000, the series isn't tired and isn't rehashing the same old storyline. This book is a fantastic edition to the series. But it is also probably my favorite book in the series, because Butters goes through an amazing transformation, and I got to cheer loudly for him. James Marsters is back and perfect as the narrator. This is a great listen.

I used to murder people for money, but lately it’s become more of a survival technique. Once an assassin, always an assassin. So much for being plain old Gin Blanco. With every lowlife in Ashland gunning for me, I don’t need another problem, but a new one has come to town anyway. Salina might seem like a sweet Southern belle, but she’s really a dangerous enemy whose water elemental magic can go head-to-head with my own Ice and Stone power.
