For once, Joanne Walker's not out to save the world. She's come to terms with the host of shamanic powers she's been given, her job as a police detective has been relatively calm, and sheï¿¿ï¿¿s got a love life for the first time in memory. Not bad for a woman who started out the year mostly dead. But it's Halloween, and the undead have just crashed Joanne's party.

This was another excellent book. I love Joanie's inner voice. I wish all of Murphy's writings were available on audible.com. Murphy, Ilona Andrews, Karen Chance, and Maria Snyder are my favorite authors. Please get all of their writings on audible.com. As always, Gabra Zackman is wonderful.

Quentin and his friends are now the kings and queens of Fillory, but the days and nights of royal luxury are starting to pall. After a morning hunt takes a sinister turn, Quentin and his old friend Julia charter a magical sailing ship and set out on an errand to the wild outer reaches of their kingdom. Their pleasure cruise becomes an adventure when the two are unceremoniously dumped back into the last place Quentin ever wants to see: his parent's house in Chesterton, Massachusetts.

This series just does not deliver on any of the possibilities. This story is about a bunch of assholes who continue to be assholes and feel sorry for themselves because they are misunderstood assholes. It is tiresome.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

I am struggling a lot with a review for this book. I wanted this book to be great, but it isn't. The plot is essentially Harry Potter's world meets The Chronicles of Narnia with a touch of the NeverEnding Story. There isn't a lot new here. While I listened, I kept hoping for a twist in the worlds created by other authors, but there wasn't one. I wouldn't recommend this book to others, but I am currently listening to Book 2 in the hopes that the series novelty/hook will be delivered in the second installment of this series.

In The Witch with No Name, Kim Harrison brings back her wildly popular heroine for one final, epic battle. Rachel Morgan's come a long way from the klutzy runner fleeing a bad job. She's faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She's crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She's lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has become something much more.

I love this series. The writing is good. The ideas are brilliant, and the characters are all tragically flawed and relatable. I will miss Rachel Morgan and her family.

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame - whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast.

It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher - and the victim's wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom - if it exists at all - is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects...except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant.

The Peter Grant collection a paranormal detective series which takes place in central London. This assembly is a fun listen by a sci-fi author with Dr. Who cred. The stories are interesting with sharp wit, dry British humor, and can withstand ridiculous behaviors like binge listening. I have binge listened to the first three books, and I still love this series. If you like collections like The Dresden Files, you will enjoy this selection. Furthermore, the narrations are a perfect match for the writing. Worth the listen. Highly recommend.

Body and soul. The song. That's what London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho's 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body - a sure sign that something about the man's death was not at all natural but instead supernatural. Body and soul - they're also what Peter will risk as he investigates a pattern of similar deaths in and around Soho.

This is a fun series full of quirky characters, and I love quirky characters. Ravaged ups the stakes for the characters and has a lot more action than other installments in The Hunger. Ravaged also involves some interesting character development and fully introduces some newish and definitely awesome characters.

This series is brilliant. I am so glad I stumbled across it. Ben Aaronovitch captures British sarcasm perfectly, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith narrates it wonderfully! Together, the book and the narration really bring the London experience alive. It reminds me so much of living in London that I want to pop over to Drummond Street for some Indian food.

When two cannibalistic, gravely wounded men stagger into the town of Gehenna, all hell breaks loose. Infamous outlaw Mad Dog McCall, stuck in the city jail, must fight for his life to escape. The lonely, intelligent, and snarky Karen must make horrific sacrifices to survive the night against the growing army of the dead. Together they set upon a journey of biblical proportions, fighting against the living and the infected, hoping against hope to find a safe haven in the middle of Hell. The Old West can't fathom the zombie hoard that is about to consume it.

There is nothing new in this trilogy. Zombies meet a bunch of Old West stereotypes in three short stories. Even though there is nothing new here, it is still a fun listen. Even though this trilogy doesn't provide a new take on the zombie folklore, this is still an entertaining listen. Listen to it for what it is and enjoy it.

Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains and dissected by three rivers, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is an idyllic city. It's quiet, the traffic is nonexistent, and floating down the Allegheny River on a boat is peaceful and serene. It's perfect...as long as you can ignore the mindless monstrosities roaming the streets, vampires ruling the night, and the insane, power-hungry human survivors. Mankind has devolved, mutating into mindless horrors. Only weeks ago, they built skyscrapers and traveled to space.

I love this series for one very similar reason. This series takes eccentric secondary characters and repositions them as the primary characters of this apocalyptic novel. I always love the eccentric secondary characters; so, I was thrilled to find a series that stars them. While Brant narrative isn't as brilliant as Shaun of the Dead, it is still a fun and short listen. The narrator is passable but runs out of believable new voices toward the middle of the novel.
