We’ve been told that a vegetarian diet can feed the hungry, honor the animals, and save the planet. Lierre Keith believed in that plant-based diet and spent twenty years as a vegan. But in The Vegetarian Myth, she argues that we’ve been led astray - not by our longings for a just and sustainable world, but by our ignorance. e truth is that agriculture is a relentless assault against the planet, and more of the same won’t save us. In service to annual grains, humans have devastated prairies and forests, driven countless species extinct, altered the climate, and destroyed the topsoil - the basis of life itself....

    J. S. White says: "Interesting take on sustainability"

What did you love best about The Vegetarian Myth?

The fact that this book is written by a former vegetarian/vegan, and not someone who has never tried the lifestyle and eating style that is being criticized and dissected.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Vegetarian Myth?

Too many eye-opening truths to pick out just one.

What about Joyce Bean’s performance did you like?

The narrator made this very long book very easy to listen to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No

    Any additional comments?

While I've never been a vegan or vegetarian, I've always had in the back of my mind that this would be a more moral way to live, not to mention healthier. I am so glad that I decided to read this book before making such a drastic change in my lifestyle. The truths that the author presents were most eye-opening, as they were either things I had never considered, or were in fact exactly the opposite of what I had previously believed. If you or someone you know is considering diving into a plant-based diet lifestyle, please take a look at the information so well presented in this book.

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. In Folks, This Ain't Normal, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love.

This book is simply amazing. I am so glad that Joel narrated the story himself. I don't think that any other person could have delivered the stories and information quite as effectively and Joel speaking his own words. I'm not sure even where to start with a review, but I can tell you that if you approach this book with an open mind, it can seriously change your life, beginning with the food choices you make. Joel is an amazing man, and I'd say he's quite a revolutionary. At least when it comes to what and how we eat. Not to say that this book is about nutrition, but rather it looks at the bigger picture of how food and other life factors affect our planet and environment. I think the world would be a better place if more people read this book and implemented the advice that Joel gives.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.
