Western Society is in confusion, the industrial world is teetering on collapse, and it looks like things could get worse. Agrarian blogger, historian, and "plain" preacher Michael Bunker has been living off of the grid for many years, and he has some advice for those living in the industrial/consumerist economy... living an off off-grid life is achievable. It has been done for thousands of years, and it can be done today...

If you could sum up Surviving Off Off-Grid in three words, what would they be?

    Much useful advice

Who was your favorite character and why?

    The author

What does James Killavey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Reads very clearly - good pacing

What did you learn from Surviving Off Off-Grid that you would use in your daily life?

Lots of practical stuff about living without the power grid. Many of these things can be applied, not just in the event of a disaster, but as a way of saving money and living healthier in everyday life.

    Any additional comments?

Really don't understand why some people are so upset about his faith. Yes, be believes and is not afraid to say it but that is not what the book is all about. It's all about very practical advice about not relying so much on something that could easily stop working for a few hours, a few days or a long time. Very practical advice about getting through such and event and preparing for such an eventuality.

This remarkably immediate memoir tells of the U.S Army's essential role in the Pacific campaigns alongside the Navy and Marine Corps. America's sons, born in the first quarter of the 20th century, were forged in the twin crucibles of the Great Depression and World War II. The values and attitudes of these mostly idealistic young males ultimately sustained them in horrific trials against incredibly courageous, and often suicidally-committed, Japanese soldiers blindly loyal to their superior officers and the Emperor.

Where does Through These Portals rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best...certainly the best true life war book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    The author

Which character – as performed by James Killavey – was your favorite?

Again...the author. Narrator did a very good job. Clear and conveyed emotion when called for without going over the top.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Title of book..Through These Portals.

    Any additional comments?

The young men who enlisted or were drafted and sent to the Pacific theater thought they were going on "a great adventure." They left the U.S. as boys and, those who survived, came out battle hardened men who saw death many times and often inflicted death. The battle scenes in this book are as true to the the horrors of war the way it really is as any book I have ever read. And I've read a lot of them. Our country would not be what it is today if not for the sacrifice of all those incredibly brave men. The book is a raw and powerful look of what they had to go though to ensure freedom for the rest of us.This book is the best first person WW II book I've read. It is a must read for those who, like myself, want to know what the war in the Pacific was really like. My father was there but would never talk about it. Now I know why. He, and the many others who went though that hell were true American heroes but they simply did not want to relive, even for a moment, those awful memories. God bless you Dad, and God bless all our troops, past and present.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Spy in the Shadows to be better than the print version?

    Yes...Narrator brought it to life.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Many twists and turns...usually I can figure out the "bad guy." Not this time.

Which character – as performed by James Killavey – was your favorite?

All of them. Did a great job with a very large group of characters..and accents.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end that...wasn't really the end...can't give anymore away.

    Any additional comments?

Excellent story and very well read.

Too young and naive to care about the tensions between nations, Dexter Silverhawk considered himself the luckiest man alive when he found a derelict voidship hidden amongst some asteroids. Making it void-worthy and finding a crew to sail it seem like minor problems when he ends up in a Federation prison. Rotting in a communal cell, his luck shows a fickle side when a mysterious elven woman is thrust into into his life. Helping her fend off an assault Dexter quickly learns that her mind and her tongue are weapons against which he has little defense.

Would you listen to Voidhawk again? Why?

Yes...and I probably will. Because it's THAT good! Worth a second listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Voidhawk?

Ah...really can't say because it would give too much away.

What about James Killavey’s performance did you like?

Excellent job with the many voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nope...too long. Really made some car trips fly by though.

    Any additional comments?

My wife and I are both big fans of the all-too-short sci-fi series, Firefly. When listening to this we both noticed a lot of similarities to that show, which may be one reason we liked it so much. However it is also quite different in many ways. In this strange universe there are also dwarves, elves and other strange creatures...a little like The Lord of the Rings characters in space! It takes a big "suspension of disbelief" to accept many things in this universe but, once you get past that, there are wonderful characters and lots of "swash-buckling" space adventure. In short, we both loved it! This is the kind of book that could easily be made into a series...and we hope it is.

Furious when the wild tempest swept into his conference room, insulted, and attacked him, Nate was more than ready to make her eat her words and apologize. However, the moment he set eyes on her again there was only one thing he wanted above everything else. And that was to get her into bed. What he never expected was to keep on experiencing the best sex he’d ever had in his life. He was positive if he could have only one more night with her he could wash her completely out of his system. Much to his horror, though, he realized it wasn’t going to be that simple; like an addict he craved her even more.

What did you love best about Witch of the Demon Seas?

Poul Anderson is one of my favorite authors but I had never heard of this novella.Glad I got it. A bit different than Anderson's usual type of story...more "Conan on another Planet" than straight sci-fi but, as usual for Anderson, well written and a good story.Narrator did a good job, too.

What other book might you compare Witch of the Demon Seas to and why?

A bit odd that a review talks about the Kindle version having a format problem. I've got it...and it doesn't. Maybe they fixed it after the review.

Time Pawn first appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories in June ,1954. Under pressure from his publishers, Dick expanded the story into a full length novel - Doctor Futurity. The original is an excellent story but most critics agree that the expanded version was not a success.

I am a big fan of Philp K. Dick. However, one of the few books of his I did not like was Dr. Futurity. Now I see why. It's a "padded" version of this original with lots of stuff thrown in that gives it a rambling effect. This is a much tighter and better story. Glad I came across it.

Science-fiction fans rejoice! Killco Publications has collected some of the best pulp fiction stories for your listening pleasure. During the heyday of science fiction pulp magazines (1930-1963) many excellent stories by "one shot wonders" and writers who went on to become giants in the field of science fiction were first presented.

What did you love best about The Best of Pulp Sci-Fi: Volume 1, 1952-1955?

These is an excellent collection of sci-fi stories. They are from the 50's but the "updating" mentioned in the intro must have worked well because they did not seem dated at all.
To each his own, I guess, with the narration. I thought it was excellent. Since another reviewer did not, I suggest you listen to the sample...it's almost 5 minutes long...and judge for yourself.

This is one of Lovecraft's most beautifully written and frightening stories. It is written from the perspective of a surveyor, who, while surveying a rural area that is to be flooded near the town of Arkham, comes across a mysterious, abandoned farmstead, which is completely devoid of all life. At the center of the farmstead is an old well. The site fills him with an unnatural sense of dread, and, as it turns out, there is good reason for that feeling.

    Horror from Space
