There's a twisted serial killer stalking the streets of New York City, dealing his own perverse version of justice. He kills swiftly and silently, leaving his calling card: a red "J" on the bodies of his prey. His victims have one thing in common: they've all been jurors in the city's most infamous cases; cases in which the killer was found "not guilty". Overnight, the Justice Killer has the city in a stranglehold. And there's only one man who has a shot at finding him.

After listening to the author's audiobook, "Night Spider," I liked it enough to gamble on this. I am also a fan of the narrator, Scott Brick. This audiobook just does not deliver. It goes into the lives of too many characters, with story lines that after 10 hours of listening, have not yet converged. Although the idea of a "Justice Killer" righting wrongs by murdering those who set other killers free was intriguing, the author fails to create any plausibile scenarios.

I simply did not care what happened to any character and only finished listening to it in order to find out who dunnit. Not only will I avoid John Lutz's books in the future, it will be a long time until I get another one narrated by Scott Brick.

One evening, Danny, an East End cockney who works as a garage mechanic, takes his girlfriend up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. He crosses the path of Spencer Craig, a West End barrister tipped to be the youngest Queen's Counsel of his generation. A few hours later Danny is arrested for murder and later is sentenced to 22 years in prison.

I have never read a Jeffrey Archer novel before, but the reviews of this were so glowing that I could not resist. He weaves a careful tale, with interesting characters. The narrator is amazing. However, the story is just not believable, which is ultimately why I rated low.

Hollywood homicide detective Petra Connor has helped psychologist Alex Delaware crack tough cases in the past. And in Jonathan Kellerman's New York Times best seller Billy Straight, she took the lead in the desperate hunt for a teenage runaway stalked by a vengeful murderer. Now the complex and wryly compassionate Petra is once again at the center of the action, in a novel of cunning twists and page-turning suspense.

    Woody says: "Vintage Kellerman"
    "Good book, lousy narrator"
    Overall

I've given up on his Delaware novels, but the books with detective Petra O'Connor are still fresh. Too bad the narrator had no voice personality, which lowered my rating of the book.

John Lutz is fascinated by the nighttime dangers that await women alone. In The Night Spider, he improvises a new variation on this theme with a thriller about a serial killer who preys upon women living in high-rises. With few visible means of entry, the mysterious stalker kills women while they sleep in their beds behind securely locked doors.

This audiobook author was new to me, chosen mostly because of the narrator, Scott Brick. I was pleased with the choice; the story kept my interest throughout. My only regret was the quick ending to a very extensive build-up.

A gripping, poignant, and masterful courtroom novel, The Best Defense is a major work from one of America's most popular writers.

Because it was a recent release, I got it thinking it was next in the series. It is actually an earlier novel, and that is the only thing I regretted. The book kept my interest and the narration brings the characters alive. I recommend.

It may be difficult to imagine a life-affirming book which begins with the main character, a 14-year-old girl, recounting her rape and murder, but Alice Sebold's debut novel is just such a book. Having received advance critical acclaim that before now was reserved only for literary giants, this book will no doubt invite comparisons to works such as Tracy Chevalier's The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Toni Morrison's Beloved.

I enjoyed the audiobook's narrator, her voice quality and nuances for each character. I was intrigued with the book and the characters. Unfortunately, the story went on, and on, and on. I think an abridged version would be a better story.

As an Oregonian, I was excited at the prospect of hearing this audiobook. Other than my insider's knowledge of the mispronunciation of "Willamette," I found the narrator to be quite good. The characters were interesting and the plot tightly woven. I definitely recommend this mystery.
