"Incredible"
This is the funniest book i have ever listened to in my life. I am serious. I could not stop laughing. I never knew it was possible to fit so much humor into a good story line. The writer is a genius.
"Don't Ignore series because of narrator changes"
I never listen to book series with multiple narrators so i was very glad at taking a chance this time. So far i have listened to 4 books from the series, the 1st one had the best narrator but the books afterwards have great plot. I was also supprised at the "young readers" label. The main character stars off at 17 but as the novels progress you don't see any immaturaty except for a few reminders here and there. This series doesn't have sex scenes of a graphic nature except in one or 2 places and when they do, they are very well done. I love the amount of social conflicts with an emphasis on false assumptions. I am also impressed by the amount of combat and how you as a reader learn along with the characters in the books to be guards. The books are very well writen. Oh one more thing i should mention... the audio books have some sound effects at certain places and is done better then most. An example would be when one character is talking with another using magic there is kinda of a cave reverabrate effect that you might not hear unless your paying attention. I have always thought sound effects were annoying or amateurish but I think this audio series has changed my mind.
"Dont buy any books to this series."
I bought the first book, it had some problems. I thought I was being overly critical so i decided to give the second try. That was a mistake. There were too many characters. I had to restart one chapter 3 times because I could not figure out who was who. I would hear the narrator say 2 lines and then after the fact realize it's 2 different people. When that was not happening I was getting lost inside the writer's schizophrenic storyline jumping from one group of characters to another. I think the final straw for me was some mysterious ring that was inserted into the story inorder to con us into thinking all of the past random scenes were leading up to this "planed" part of the book. It was just stupid. I am sorry for being so harsh but it was. Someone mentions a ring one other time then all the sudden it's like the most important thing ever. I turned off the book without finishing it.
"Give it a try"
The book is good but you have to tollerate the first half. This vampire book is a more of a back to basics without drowning you in over the top reality changes that break believability. Many people will miss out because they don't hang in there and realize that the narrators monotone is due to 3rd person pespective and a disorientated character being overly emphasized early on. There were a few parts where the he said she said got annoying but i understand that because the transition from text to audio isn't always perfect. The book got good latter on and I ended up loving it so i am buying the next one.
"Good book destroyed by soft porn"
Ok this is the second of the series and it's more of the same. The story line is great, then a stupid sex scene is throne in to destroy it. I know every once in a while you have those reviewers (complainers) who don't realize a book is romance so they give 1 or 2 stars because it isn't the book for them but that is not the case here. Almost everything in my collection can be classified as a romance but even I can't take it anymore. I don't understand why authors cannot separate the book so 20 minute sex scenes are their own chapter. If I get tired of listening to porn I should be able to skip it. If there was some way for me to avoid the porn I would but oh no... you have to add something so important that if I skip to the next chapter, I am totally lost. It makes me really angry that great character development and plot is waisted on porn. I loved the Night Huntress series and I wanted to get more back story but I give up. Oh did i forget to say porn?
"Good story line ruined by too much romance."
I love the night huntress series but when I tried to listen to this one I feel like I am left out. There are many listeners like myself who like supernatural novels and enjoy character development but are tired of most vampire books being soft porn. Don't get me wrong, this is a good book it's just that I was expecting more then love stories from the “Night Huntress World”. I get the impression that the author decided to do short story romance and is leveraging their good writing skills to force a story line around it. I cannot emphasize enough that the narrator is excellent and Jeaniene Frost's writing is far better then most. The problem is that this book crossed that thin line to where you have to say it's just a romance. Besides the night huntress and this one I am also listening to “A Night Prince Novel” with Vlad which I do think is more in line with the balanced romance/action/mystery I was looking for when I tried this one. I already bought “Eternal Kiss of Darkness" just in case I am being overly critical. We will see.
"Series starts out decent but fails after book 5"
I liked the first few books. Other then the dialog related to mysterious messages and cryptic comments of antagonist i like the series very much. That is, at first. The early books were a little slow but i thought, hey most good novels are like that and then i looked over at the good ratings so i told myself i was being too harsh. Give it a chance. Book 2 and 3 were great so i guess i was being too critical. The problem is the progression of the storyline. Books 4 and 5 really expanded the supernatural content. Our main character goes from a private investigator with a near death experience to a near godly (book 5) kick a$$ heroine we all want. I liked the direction of the series so much so that i bought book 6 and 7 while i was still listening to 5. So you might be asking yourself why i rated the series so low, It's because at the end of book 5 our girl gets a ability/power reset. The girl goes from awsome to nothing. At first i thought this was just a way to relax some of the hype, ya know to steer the books back to their roots but you can't go from saving the world with super powers in one book to a character that has to have a ferrit save her in the next. She is pathetic. After skimming the rest of book 6 and book 7 i have decided to stop listening to the series.
My advice... If you did not absolutly love the first book, don't bother listening to the rest.
"Bad narrator and writing"
I am very disapointed in the narrator's inability to seperate characters. I became completely confused as to who was saying what because the first scene had 4 characters with the same monotone voice regardless of their gender and actions they took. I was also confused by the narrator refering to the supernaturals of this series as "unclean spirits". A spirit is a ghost, not a vamp or a werewolf. I did not like the amount of cursing in the first 10 minutes. I felt like the narrator was a 4 year old that needed to be put in a timeout for trying to talk like the cool kids. So now we are 7 minutes in after all that nonsense between Eric and a couple of thugs then he sneezes and hid driver says "gesundheit". Apparently this is a clue. Eric thinks to himself "that guy is a little too nice" and then a minute latter the driver shoots him but of course the assasin has to first annouce that eric figured it out before doing the deed. Bad bad writing. The audio excerpt audiable provided is totally misleading because you do not get a true sense of how bad the writing/narration actually is.
P.S. i found a site saying M.L.N. Hanover is a pseudonym for Daniel Abraham
"Love this series"
This book is the best book of the series but I am addicted to the series and can't wait for the new one to come out.
