In the ancient city of Lankhmar, two men forge a friendship in battle. The red-haired barbarian Fafhrd left the snowy reaches of Nehwon looking for a new life, while the Gray Mouser, apprentice magician, fled after finding his master dead. These bawdy brothers-in-arms cement a friendship that leads them through the wilds of Nehwon facing thieves, wizards, princesses, and the depths of their desires and fears.

"All in all a pretty good book"
    Overall

While this will likely never be on the top of my favorites list, it is a solid novel with well developed characters. The story line blends a classic Conan-type genre with a bit of the dry sense of humor you can find in the more serious parts of a Terry Pratchett novel.
I will likely get the second book in the near future...

Louisiana, 2065. A lot has changed in the 43rd year of the Kurian Order. Possessed of an unnatural and legendary hunger, the bloodthirsty Reapers have come to Earth to establish a New Order built on the harvesting of enslaved human souls. They rule the planet. They thrive on the scent of fear. And if it is night, as sure as darkness, they will come.

On this pitiless world, the indomitable spirit of mankind still breathes in Lieutenant David Valentine.

    "Suberb and Innovative"
    Overall

I stumbled across this book and am amazed that I had not heard of it before. Mr Knight successfully blends the military novel with some basic Vampire culture to create an innovative and captivating story.
Although this novel will likely not satisfy someone looking for a hard core Vampire novel, it is a good read/listen. I have already purchased the second in the series and am glad I did.
Additionally, the narration is fantastic. There is a wide range of accents and voices and it is a pleasure to listen to. Although, I often turn off my ipod with a bit of a southern drawl :)

Jason Schuyler is a werewolf. He's also one of Anita Blake's best friends, and sometimes her lover. And right now he needs her - not to be a vampire hunter, or a federal marshal, or a necromancer, or even for her rank in the werewolf pack, but because his father is dying. He needs Anita because she's a pretty woman who loves him, who can make him look like an everyday guy.

"Strictly a romance novel these days"
    Overall

Originally one of my favorite series of books, Laurell has basically converted the vampire novel to a simple romance novel. The majority of the book discusses the feelings between Anita and Jason; and there is little to no plot development of the story line in general or the book itself. Regrettably, this will probably be my last purchase of one of her novels as the subject matter they were originally about has been left long by the way side...
