An Oprah's Book Club Selection regarded as one of Faulkner's greatest and most accessible novels, Light in August is a timeless and riveting story of determination, tragedy, and hope. In Faulkner's iconic Yoknapatawpha County, race, sex, and religion collide around three memorable characters searching desperately for human connection and their own identities.

Will Patton did a really good job on this. I just didn't like many of the characters and when Christmas started beating a horse on the head, I gave up.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

M Kaner says: "I will listen to anything Juliet Stevenson reads"

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    No - didn't finish it

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am listening to Ken Follet's World Without End

What aspect of Juliet Stevenson’s performance would you have changed?

I get tired of these hyper English accents.

Was Middlemarch worth the listening time?

    No

    Any additional comments?

The irony was amusing, but this just went on and on.

OK - so why, when I listened to one of his books did I go ahead and get another Michael Connelly book. Three books. The main character is just annoying.

Somewhat interesting, but far from enthralling. I can't think of fifteen words to characterize this book.

In bold and spirited prose featuring his irreverent wit and heartbreaking honesty, McCourt records the trials, triumphs, and surprises he faces in public high schools around New York City.

Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face to face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame.

Steven says: "Great Legal Thriller, Great Reader"
    "just ok"
    Overall

I guess I just don't like Michael Connelly's characters or style all that much. Yes, a surprise ending. But nothing all that interesting before that.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache has come to Winter Carnival - not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. But violent death is inescapable, even in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society - where an obsessive historian’s quest for the remains of the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain, ends in murder. Could a secret buried with Champlain for nearly 400 years be so dreadful that someone would kill to protect it?

    Judy says: "Another great tale!"
"Love the characters and who done it's"
    Overall

Narrator is terrific. I listed to bits and pieces over and over just to hear his voice. Mystery is terrific. Very complex and keeps you guessing. I have now listenend to every one of Louise Penny's books available on audible.

It's spring in the tiny, forgotten village; buds are on the trees, and the first flowers are struggling through the newly thawed earth. But not everything is meant to return to life. When some villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a séance at the Old Hadley House, they are hoping to rid the town of its evil - until one of their party dies of fright.

Sara says: "Spring in Three Pines"
    "how does she do that?"
    Overall

These mysteries/stories/character studies are so complex and full of wisdom and humor - and poetry. I am going to hate finishing the last of the series (that starts with Still Life, by the way). I believe my favorite character is Gabri - or perhaps Ruth. I may need to listen more than once to each of them to carry away more of the references and pearls of wisdom. And terrific narrator.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Lauren says: "Great voice adds to already amazing story"
    "Annoying"
    Overall

Clever in a few spots but frenetic, hard to follow and I didn't finish listening. I wish audible would have an "If you didn't like this, you won't like these" section. I just bought Connie Mills book about "...the dog." If you like Good Omens, you will probably like Ms. Mills' "sci-fi" which is more like a load of quips. Maybe if I were English...?

Acclaimed author Andrei Cherny tells the gripping saga of a rag-tag band of Americans - with limited resources and little hope for success - keeping West Berliners alive in the face of Soviet tyranny, winning the hearts and minds of former enemies, and giving the world a shining example of fundamental goodness.

    Alex says: "Wonderful Story, Well-Read"
    "good history lesson"
    Overall

I learned a lot about the post WWII history. It was only the metaphors that annoyed me - "lips like a petulent rose," and "thoughts tossed like tomatoes in a salad." Please. And that the adjectives could never be single. Big Broad shoulders, etc.
