Love this Regency plot set in modern USA. Orphan Lady Emma travels to Texas to lose her virgnity, avoid the earl's suit, and save St. Gert's girls school. Indolent, wealthy rake refuses to explain himself despite others' misperceptions, creating conflict - Emma believes him to be a gigolo, and to have abandoned his child (really his brother); PGA and public (yes, it's a modern twist) believe he's punched the helpless without cause, tho that's not true. They fall in love and despite Emma's crazy plots manage to find happily ever after. Several laugh out loud moments when Emma's plots and Kenny's frustrations collide.
Combine Cinderella, saucy lead, sick child, miracle cure, and sexy billionaire. Stir in great voices by Plummer. Serve with a whacky environmentalist sister, tortured nerdy scientist, and flights by Supermom. What's not to like?
I read and listen to a lot of books, and it's hard to disappoint me, but this book and performance did. Why in the world does she like this man? And one more quasi-downunder "Shelia" and I might have destroyed my ipod.
