  • Supernatural Devices: A Steampunk Scarlett Novel, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Kailin Gow
    • Narrated By Candice Moll
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Scarlett is a sensible 17-year-old young lady - or so everyone thinks - but there is definitely more to her. The daughter of famous English Egyptologists and archeologists Theodore and Gemma Seely, she is prone to adventure and all the world has to offer. It is the 1890s, and she has just received a letter from one of her parents' dearest friends, a certain detective who lives on Baker Street, who needs her help on a most bizarre case.

Thomas says: "good book terrible quality"
"GOTHIC AND NOT STEAM PUNK. but a Great story!!"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

A Promising beginning to a Gothic series of. a 17 year old English girl at the turn of the 19th century. she has the ability to see the supernatural and is set on a quest to find artifacts relating to an ancient war between the vampires and Fey.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Any additional comments?

on par with the mummy movies. misleading in the beginning but a potentially good start to a promising series of a teenage female heroin pitted against supernatural forces who have their own plans for her future.

  • Words of Radiance: The Stormlight Archive, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (48 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By Brandon Sanderson
    • Narrated By Michael Kramer, Kate Reading
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In that first volume, we were introduced to the remarkable world of Roshar, a world both alien and magical, where gigantic hurricane-like storms scour the surface every few days and life has adapted accordingly. Roshar is shared by humans and the enigmatic, humanoid Parshendi, with whom they are at war.

"A Fantastic Epic. a must Hear with many repeats"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A greatly anticipated and a Must for any Fantasy Enthusiast. long anticipated, Brandon Sanderson's second book in this series. The Stormlight Archive.i could not put stop.the story was so great that i finished all 48 hours of I have listened to the first Book in this series, " The Way of Kings ", at least a dozen times since i bought it and this Story i anticipate listening to just as often. a breath taking new style of fantasy not relying on classic character or racial styles. a totally original world Building and Magic system. An Awe inspiring Epic adventure you don't want to end. setting the stage for a world changing event this series Rivals any master epic i have previously read and even 2 of those were written bye this author.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kaladin grew up in a small town as an apprentice to his surgeon father. even after repeated Betrayals losses and Setbacks he rises as a hero that inspires most of the people he meets. a Rags to riches that outclasses anything previously written.

What about Michael Kramer and Kate Reading ’s performance did you like?

A Masterfull work bye the nanaraters and the voice actors. i look worward to listening to this repeatedly. like a favorite song this will be played over and over.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Few books leave a person overwelmingly awed and impressed. i lost sleep 2 nights in a row listening to this novel as i could not stop listening.a 48 hour read in under 3 days. i plan ti liste to this a second time within the next week and many more over the next few months. i have over 400 books in my audible library and have listened to only a few so often as i did the way of kings. i expect this to be another novel often repeated. its a refreshingly new style of story and a masterwork. only 3 other series have inspired me so much the wheel of time, the sword of truth and mistborn. brandon wrote mistborn and finished the wheel of time for its deceased author. no one else could have done it so well.

    Any additional comments?

i will listen to this book and its precurser many times yet in the future and greatly look forward to the next cronicle in the series. whit thies 2 books he has set the stage for a grand master epic that will change the word of Fantasy novels as well as that of this series. i wish there were more authors who could write in such detail.

  • Cyteen

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By C. J. Cherryh
    • Narrated By Gabra Zackman, Jonathan Davis

The saga of two young friends trapped in an endless nightmare of suspicion and surveillance, of cyber-programmed servants and a ruling class with century-long lives – and the enigmatic woman who dominates them all.

troy says: "This is a Heavy Book (lovely too)"
"The Worst of the Nazi breed Mindset gone to Space"
    What disappointed you about Cyteen?

In a Far distant Future where the Worst of humanity has gone to space human breeding has become commonplace. genetically cloning the brightest people to save thier mental skillbase humanity has degraded to a mostly cloned people. Born People are becoming uncommon and the Ozzie Human Clones are manufactured like cloned cattle and treated about the same. the top level humans or clones are given total freedom and can not be punished even if they commit mass murder in public because their skills are needed bye the Government. Soldiers are cloned in Mass birthing factories and programmed bye Taped mental training imprinted directly into their memories. all behavior can be controlled bye thies mental programming tapes and minds can be wiped and reprogrammed.

this is the story of the Clone factories leaders and top workers and the debauchery and destruction they impose.

i stopped reading after the first few chapters maybe 1/4th of the book. i set it aside 3 times before i finally decided to deciding to not read the rest and write this review.

this is not a mental image i want my subconscious.

Would you ever listen to anything by C. J. Cherryh again?

C,J, Cherryh has always been a favorite author of mine but this story's mindset if straight out of Nazi Germany's Arien Nation breeding camps. Its a dangerous mindset to promote looking at humans, even cloned ones, as disposable trash. I dont believe in censorship but his story definitely deserve a severe caution and should be limited to mature readers only.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

naration and stopry production was fine. just the mental images are depresing and dangerous.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Cyteen?

if i was her publisher i would have refused this book. the writing was fine but the subject matter is not one that should be openly promoted. too many people with unstable minds could use this to justify human cruelty and it gives them ideas that should not be expressed in anything less than a college psychological diseases class. scenes where clones ozzie human are casually killed and disposed of because their owner died and there deaths were in the owners will.

    Any additional comments?

This book covers subject matter that is dangerous to young impressionable minds. its should not be censored but a String warning caution given that its not for casual reading.

  • A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (33 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By Roy Dotrice

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

DCinMI says: "Review of First 5 Books"
    "a fantasy political psychodrama"
What would have made A Game of Thrones better?

remove the psychodrama. this story is all about political back stabing and betrayal set in a fantast environment.

Has A Game of Thrones turned you off from other books in this genre?

i dont like polatics and psychodrama. it took me 3 tries to get past the first few chapters and i will never finish this book or listen to this series. i see far too much crap like this in the real world. i don't need to fantasize about it.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Any additional comments?

i have seen many rave reviews for this sceries. good for them. this is just not my style. there is little adventure and lots of intregue and drama about betrayal and corruption. i prefer a heavy dose of adventure mystery and creativity. all of which are lacking in this book. nothing new just a rehashing of the infinite fantasy back story present in most medieval fantasy based stories
