Alec Milius is young, smart, and ambitious. He also has a talent for deception. He is working in a dead-end job when a chance encounter leads him to MI6, the elite British Secret Intelligence Service, handing him an opportunity to play center stage in a dangerous game of espionage.

    Overall

If a story about a self-indulgent loser is your cup of tea, then this book will be just what you are looking for. But anyone seeking a well crafted espionage story or thriller should leave this one alone.
The prose is alright and the reading well done. It's a hopeless story about a hopeless young man. I'm sorry to have wasted those hours of listening.

In David Ignatius' gripping new novel, spies don' t bother to steal information...they change it, permanently and invisibly. Graham Weber has been director of the CIA for less than a week when a Swiss kid in a dirty T-shirt walks into the American consulate in Hamburg and says the agency has been hacked, and he has a list of agents' names to prove it. This is the moment a CIA director most dreads. Weber isn' t sure where to turn until he meets a charismatic (and unstable) young man named James Morris who runs the Internet Operations Center.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I did recommend it, before finishing the story, now not so much. Love the details offered up about cyber criminals going after corrupt officials but then the end came and the story just went 'poof' into the ether.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

George Guidall is always brilliant...any character he does comes to life.

Do you think The Director needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No. It needs a rewrite.

The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America's valuable mole in Moscow.

What made the experience of listening to Red Sparrow the most enjoyable?

So now I can repeat myself and say this is probably the best spy story I have ever read. Cannot wait until the sequel and...I want the recipes in written form!

Do try and see what you think?

The Aeneid represents one of the greatest cultural and artistic achievements of Western Civilization. Within the brooding and melancholy atmosphere of Virgil's pious masterpiece lies the mythic story of Aeneas and his flight from burning Troy, taking with him across the Mediterranean the survivors of the Greek onslaught. Aeneas, after many travails and adventures, including a love affair with Dido Queen of Carthage and a visit to the underworld to see his father, ends up in Italy.

It is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Possibly my new favorite book of all time. If you can read it and pass it on please do so.

The Little Stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline - its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at 20 to nine.

...did I listen to this book? Simon Vance is a wonderful reader, therefore I was captured by the sample. I listened to every last word, then wondered why.

Faced with the end of his quiet, settled life, reluctant spy Milo Weaver has no choice but to turn back to his old job as a “tourist”. Before he can get back to the CIA’s dirty work, he has to prove his loyalty to his new bosses, who know little of Milo’s background and less about who is really pulling the strings in the government above the Department of Tourism—or in the outside world, which is beginning to believe the legend of its existence.

Joanne says: "Elegantly written spy story"
    "below Minus"
    Overall

Possibly the most ridiculous and convoluted spy story I have ever read.

The first three chapters sound like the beginnings of three different novels.

The hero is an emotional mess dealing with an amazingly dysfunctional family that I have a really hard time caring about.

It's not sure I will be able to finish this silly story. Good reader though.

It may be time to reread Steig Larrsen.

Blood oozing from his abdomen, his father warns Ned to "be very careful." But of whom? Of what?<

Sent to Vienna to authenticate a painting, the art restorer and sometime spy Gabriel Allon is sidetracked by a photograph that throws his world upside-down. Could it really be the face of a man who during the last days of World War II had brutalized his mother on the Death March from Auschwitz?

Leonard says: "Another Fine Silva Novel"
"Good Writer - Not So Good Story"
    Overall

Silva's book The Reluctant Spy was a complex, interesting page turner, this one, sad to say, is predictable and unconvincing. Reprising the Holocaust at every opportunity, it lurches into grizzly details of a disgusting period of world history yet feels more like sadistic porn than a real spy story. Is it possible to be bored and disgusted at the same time? Mr Silva makes it happen.

In the hottest summer of the 20th century, in a down-at-the-heels hamlet in rural Italy, six children take to their bikes across the scorched countryside. When they arrive at an abandoned farmhouse, one of them, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano, discovers what appears to be the body of a boy his own age. He is too frightened to tell his friends, and his father refuses to listen.

This is a wonderful story. I read it in print and am delighted to see it here. At first this seems like a quiet tale, but the emotional tension builds right to the end. Not too many of this Italian writers books are in print in English. I hope that changes soon.
