All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

This book was very powerful and thought provoking. I listened to this book with an open mind and I was pleasantly surprised at the tenacity that Amy Chua has in raising her daughters as well as the bravery she expelled in writing and publishing this book. The best part was listening to how she learned more about herself through the strict discipline she required of her daughters and how the end results confirmed her goals but also allowed her to understand that her daughters needed to affirm their own with the same competitive spirit.

Having just celebrated her 26th birthday in 1976 California, Dana, an African-American woman, is suddenly and inexplicably wrenched through time into antebellum Maryland. After saving a drowning white boy there, she finds herself staring into the barrel of a shotgun and is transported back to the present just in time to save her life. During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes she's been given a challenge.

This is one of my favorite books. I read it in college years ago and was happy to find it on Audible. This is a great read and gives a great twist on the history of slavery and the relationships between slaves and their masters.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

When I learned that the book was being made into a movie, even though I read it already I wanted to hear it and it was so worth it. The narrators did an excellent job transforming my every day life into a hot and bothered Mississippi ...I loved listening this on Audible and so happy that its in my library because I'm going to listen to it again!

In her beloved New York Times best sellers Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and, most recently, Shanghai Girls, Lisa See has brilliantly illuminated the potent bonds of mother love, romantic love, and love of country. Now, in her most powerful novel yet, she returns to these timeless themes, continuing the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed 19-year-old daughter, Joy.

I'm only on part 1, chapter 9. I am enjoying the plot and can't wait to hear what happens throughout the book. However I'm a bit distracted by the performance...every word and sentence seems to be spoken in a rising pitch. There is virtually no variance. I don't know if this is done for the accent or to identify the thoughts of a young college woman. I want to know what happens so I'm going to listen to it because I believe it is a good literary read.

Glorious is set against the backdrops of the Jim Crow South, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights era. Blending the truth of American history with the fruits of Bernice L. McFadden's rich imagination, this is the story of Easter Venetta Bartlett, a fictional Harlem Renaissance writer whose tumultuous path to success, ruin, and revival offers a candid portrait of the American experience in all its beauty and cruelty.

Cheryl says: "Good Book - Entertaning and Educational"
    "Absolutely Glorious"

Alfred Woodard did a remarkable job narrating this story. The characters are as colorful as the plots and twists, heartache and joyful moments....I didn't think I would be able to hang after listening to the first few chapters because the events are so grueling but I am so happy that I did because the very last quote from Zora Neale Hurston speaks volumes after this read...
