In 1959, the year Terry Galloway turned nine, the voices of everyone she loved began to disappear. No one yet knew that an experimental antibiotic given to her mother had wreaked havoc on her fetal nervous system, eventually causing her to go deaf. As a self-proclaimed "child freak," she acted out her fury with her boxy hearing aids and Coke-bottle glasses by faking her own drowning at a camp for crippled children

The reader of this book is completely wrong for it. Lots of fake sincerity - everything this author is railing against. Don't know who cast the reader but someone got a payoff under the table. The book however was interesting enough to keep me going.

James Hynes is the author of three New York Times Notable Books of the Year. That same publication praises Kings of Infinite Space as “unspeakably funny!” This offbeat novel satirizes an experience ubiquitous to modern times—office life. With a defeated sigh, ex-college professor Paul Trilby faces the downward spiral that is his existence. After his wife and three subsequent girlfriends dump him, and he loses just as many jobs, he’s sure he’s a pawn in some vast conspiracy.

Glowing reviews but I found this book slow. Took forever to get where it was going. It was reviewed as being hilarious. Nope. Don't think so.

Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

If you have an interest in the history and future of space exploration, this is the book for you.

The dusty files of a venerable dictionary publisher, a hidden cache of coded clues, a story written by a phantom author, an unsolved murder in a gritty urban park: all collide memorably in Emily Arsenault's magnificent debut, at once a teasing literary puzzle, an ingenious suspense novel, and an exploration of definitions: of words, of who we are, and of the stories we choose to define us.

What disappointed you about The Broken Teaglass?

Great concept but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know if it's the performances or the material but the characters weren't interesting. The writing seemed clunky to me, as well.

Allison says: "High Fantasty in a modern world setting"
    "Disappointing"

This was a disappointment. Very derivative. The teenage leads were weakly drawn. The writing was repetitive. Enjoyed the title character and some of the settings. For kids.
