Grace. We talk as though we understand the term. The bank gives us a grace period. The seedy politician falls from grace. Musicians speak of a grace note. We describe an actress as gracious, a dancer as graceful. We use the word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and pre-meal prayers. We talk as though we know what grace means. But do we really understand it? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response.

If you could sum up Grace in three words, what would they be?

Inspirational, encouraging, a reminder of God's goodness - His grace. The author provides the listener with ample scriptures and reminds us about how we need to appreciate the gift of God's grace, something I hate to admit that I have, at times, taken for granted. I really appreciate this book and the reminder that, "My grace is sufficient for you. for my power is made perfect in weakness" ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9. I claim this verse and hope that others will enjoy this short listen as much as I have.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

I loved Roots when I was a young girl and still love it today. It is an amazing saga of one young man and his voyage from his home in Africa to the slave quarters in America. The story is often sad, but always hopeful. I truly LOVE this story and can't imagine a better story to listen to. I recommend this to anyone who cares to hear a great story.

This now classic book revealed Flannery O’Connor as one of the most original and provocative writers to emerge from the South. Her apocalyptic vision of life is expressed through grotesque, often comic situations in which the principal character faces a problem of salvation: the grandmother, in the title story, confronting the murderous Misfit; a neglected four-year-old boy looking for the Kingdom of Christ in the fast-flowing waters of the river; General Sash, about to meet the final enemy.

I listened to the book in it's entirety, but kind of wish I had not. The stories are very sad and unfeeling. I don't like any of them. I had never read anything from this author and had no idea that her stories would be this bad. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't waste any of my time on them. I kept thinking there would be a good one in there somewhere, but there was not. They are all pessimistic and depressing with a sad and bleak worldview. I definitely don't recommend anyone waste their time with this one.

This is the wonderful story of what happens when a dog dies and comes back, over and over again, to new lives (ever heard that a cat has nine lives? - well, in this tale, it is the dog who has multiple lives - although not actually nine)... it is an outstanding story that seems to come alive with the telling. I believe the audible version is better than reading this time. I truly loved this story and intend to listen to A Dog's Journey too. I recommend this one for anyone and especially for anyone who loves dogs!!!

In Captive in Iran, Maryam and Marziyeh recount their 259 days in Evin. It’s an amazing story of unyielding faith - when denying God would have meant freedom. Of incredible support from strangers around the world who fought for the women’s release. And of bringing God’s light into one of the world’s darkest places - giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

What made the experience of listening to Captive in Iran the most enjoyable?

This is a inspirational listen (read) that I believe most anyone will be deeply moved by. These two incredible women are sharing their faith in Iran when they are arrested and put into prison. This is their journey, in detail, including many stories of the other women they share their imprisonment with. They continue to share their faith inside the prison, with the other women and the guards. I loved listening and was moved to tears at points. This made me ponder about what I would do in the same situation? They could have denied their faith and been released at any point, but refused to deny Christ. I'm a Christian and felt like these women were anointed by God to share their faith with all these people. I loved listening to this but believe even those who aren't Christians will also be blessed by reading this story. This is one that I will encourage my friends and family to read or listen to. It is wonderful.

What did you like best about this story?

    Jesus

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes - when these women prayed for people and had their prayers answered and when others made commitments to Christ

Leading evangelist Billy Graham has written an inspiring and thought-provoking work based on his personal quest to understand the most mysterious and difficult aspect of the Trinity. After a discussion with a noted Swiss theologian, Dr. Graham began a study of the Bible to see what is said about the Holy Spirit. As he progressed through his examination, he became concerned by the “misunderstanding and even ignorance in some Christian circles concerning the Third Person of the Trinity.”

For some of us being a Christian is harder than it should be. Discouraged, anxious, worn down, we wonder what happened to the power and the joy that Jesus promised. Jim Cymbala believes that many of us are missing something vital. Christianity, he says, for even the best-intentioned person or church, is impossible without the Holy Spirit.

In this remarkable recording, C.S. Lewis shows why millions of readers have acclaimed him the greatest spokesman for Christianity in the twentieth century. In a resonant, baritone voice, Lewis explores the nature of the four Greek words that are translated love in English: "storge" (affection), "philia" (friendship), "eros" (sexual or romantic love) and "agape" (selfless love).

Where does The Four Loves rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is C.S. Lewis himself and I had never heard him, so felt blessed to have the opportunity to hear his work as expressed by him. I enjoyed the book but didn't get it all with one listen and will definitely be listening to it again and possibly more than once more. It is a great topic - LOVE - and he definitely has a well thought out idea of the various aspects of love. Although I need to hear it more often to get it all, I enjoyed the first listen enough to encourage me to listen again and again. Inspiring and thought provoking.

What did you like best about this story?

    Agape Love

What about C.S. Lewis’s performance did you like?

It is in his own voice

In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of presenting the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of "asking Jesus into your heart" or "giving your life to Jesus" often gives false assurance to those who are not saved - and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives.
