The first in a "trilogy of desire", The Financier tells the story of the ruthlessly dominating broker Frank Cowperwood as he climbs the ladder of success, his adoring mistress championing his every move. Based on the life of flamboyant finance captain C. T. Yerkes, Theodore Dreiser's cutting portrayal of the unscrupulous magnate Cowperwood embodies the idea that behind every great fortune there is a crime.

Peter says: "Outstanding classic, great narrator"
"Too many irrelevant financial facts and details"
    Overall

The story could have been an interesting one but was bogged down with too much information and detail about the main character"s financial dealings.

Detective John Corey now faces his toughest assignment yet: the pursuit and capture of the world's most dangerous terrorist -- a young Arab known as "The Lion" who has baffled a federal task force and shows no sign of stopping in his quest for revenge against the American pilots who bombed Libya and killed his family.

    Patricia says: "Totally predictable"
"not as good as the lion"
    Overall

I love John Corey's humor but the violence depicted seems to have been added simply to shock the reader. Story is good but the narrator had an odd inflection in his voice whenever he came to the end of a sentence that got on my nerves after a while.

After a whirlwind romance and a honeymoon in Italy, the innocent young heroine and the dashing Maxim de Winter return to his country estate, Manderley. But the unsettling memory of Rebecca, the first Mrs. de Winter, still lingers within. The timid bride must overcome her husband's oppressive silences and the sullen history of the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, to confront the emotional horrors of the past.

    P. Wade Thompson says: "A Great Listen"
"Too good to be called a "romance""
    Overall

I was intrigued by the concept of this book from the beginning and was not disappointed. The book is about a character who is not even alive and yet is truly an integral part of the story. The narrator makes you feel the emotions of the main character right along with her. I loved this book

His name is Hardy Cates. He's a self-made millionaire who comes from the wrong side of the tracks. He's made enemies in the rough-and-tumble ride to the top of Houston's oil industry. He's got hot blood in his veins - and vengeance on his mind.

    Rebecca says: "Great romance series"
    "predictable"
    Overall

The narrator of this story did it no justice with her gravely voice and southern accent which didn't cut it. I did not find myself caring what happened to any of these characters but maybe it was because I couldn't get past the narrator's presentation.

It is a society that is, officially, a paradise. Superior to the decadent West, Stalin's Soviet Union is a haven for its citizens, providing for all of their needs: education, health care, security. In exchange, all that is required is their hard work, and their loyalty and faith to the Soviet State. But now a murderer is on the loose.

Melvin says: "Terror from all sides."
    "Makes you appreciate things"
    Overall

We are always told how we should "appreciate the freedoms we have in this country" but you really have to read this book to truly understand what that means. This book really held my attention and interest and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Sustained by a deep religious faith, Jason Harrow has built a stable family and become a pillar of principle and patriotism in the Midwest. Then the phone rings, and his past is on the other end of the line. A woman with whom he once shared a life of violence and desire claims her daughter is missing - and Jason is the one man who can find her.

    Riley says: "Disappointing"
    "Klavan can do better"
    Overall

I have enjoyed many of Andrew Klaven's past books because of the conversational tone he takes in his stories. I always like to hear his "quirky" way of thinking. This book, however, did not live up to my expectations. It was way too wordy and the parts that were supposed to be exciting and fast paced just dragged on and on and left you not really caring about what finally happened. The end of the book left many unanswered questions and I think he was just setting us up for the sequel.
