    "Entrancing historical thriller"
    Overall

In reading some of the lower rated reviews, I was hesitant to make this pick but now
I cannot think of a better way to tell the two intertwined stories presented here. They are the yin and yang of the event, and with the wonderful narration, and engrossing detail, the story flew along.....well, as fast as you can listen to those 14+ hours. Unlike other long downloads, this one kept me in the story, and I did not have to 'back-up' to remember the place....
The amazing scope of this Fair is awesome, and for the time history-making on so many fronts, from the Labor movement, to engineering, and sanitation, we can still see this Fair's footprint on our daily lives! Concurrently,
the gruesome serial-killer who took advantage of the circumstances is a potent reminder that there is always evil lurking just under the beautiful surface, and we cannot be too vigilant.
The narration was perfect, and this story will please the history buff, mystery or thriller reader in you.

Being a Girl with Glasses isn't just a style choice; it's a way of life. If you've ever had your specs steam up when walking into a bar, squinted into the sun on the soccer field, or laid eyes on a new haircut only after your locks are strewn across the floor, you know what it's like to be a GWG. Marissa Walsh has worn glasses since third grade. Now - 10 pairs of glasses, one pair of prescription sunglasses, and endless pairs of contacts later - she has fully embraced her four-eyed fate.

Andrew Yancy - late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office - has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first - this being Hiaasen country - Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters.

    James says: "Disappointed"

    Story

The Story is the Story; the Narrator is the Narrator and he can only make the story great if the story is great......this is not.
I liked Arte Johnson, he had a languid and relaxed Floridian style to his read that put me in the Florida state and kept me there for the listen... Liked his accents and the impish way he portrayed the money scenes that were beyond funny, and then comic-tragic when detailing him as the 'son' of the witchy woman.
I don't understand if it is the group-think in operation here, but even though it was a slower-paced story and read, it still had its highs, and my test? I would listen to it again...even though it was not great, it was entertaining...

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Run, don't walk to Mr Penumbra's and just do it! What a masterful book! Mystery, Tekky, New-Fangled, and old-fashioned all at once, and Robin Sloan brings it all home in the end like a Seinfeld episode!
Wow, after the listen, realizing; no sex (thanks), no violence (thanks) no language (thanks) no politics (even though it is set in SF!) and is still the most engaging mystery/novel/suspense and fantasy thing I have had the pleasure to have listened to in a LONG while! Platonic but not boring, characters you know and settings that are new and old all at once. Hits all the high points, and the pitch-perfect performance by Ari Fliakos will have me looking for his work again as well.
Sloan is hopefully the new J.K. Rowling, and will be looking for more! I never wanted this one to end!
Thanks you Robin Sloan from a classic mystery lover, and to Ari Fliakos for the great performance.

My third one, and enjoying the characters as developing, evolving and interesting as time is passing....

As long as these elements remain, I will keep listening!

The last time Sophie saw sexy P.I. Anatoly Darinsky, he practically danced a jig when she waved goodbye; a normal reaction for a man who'd nearly bought the farm trying to protect her from her own foolishness. What are the chances he'd agree to take incriminating pictures of her sister's philandering husband? Or that he'd let her tag along, you know, for research?

Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty fierce, hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Above all she sought family, particularly the thrill and the magnificence of the one from her childhood that, in her adult years, eluded her. Hamilton’s ease and comfort in a kitchen were instilled in her at an early age when her parents hosted grand parties, often for more than one hundred friends and neighbors.

It’s a few days before Christmas when Detective Shane Scully and his wife, Alexa, respond to a call in the Hollywood Hills. The crime scene is the pristine backyard swimming pool of a once immaculate mansion on Skyline Drive, the site of an infamous murder decades prior, in which a family was killed in cold blood on Christmas Eve. In the ensuing years, the house has been shuttered and left exactly as it stood on that terrible night.

Zoe C. Johnson says: "The best of the Shane Scully series"
    "Bittersweet, But a Great Listen!"
    Overall

Since the passing this year of author Stephen Cannell, unless there were more manuscripts, will miss his wonderful way with the 'police case' mystery.....great characters, humor and action.
Scott Brick as the narrator was 'spot on' and very easy to listen and enjoy over and over....as is what will have to happen. Will have to go back and listen to the rest of the 'Shane Skully' series...but from this one, they work well as a stand alone story as well, and the narration really adds to the story.

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

This is the continuation of Kitchen Confidential...and also a review of sorts of many of the heavy hitters in the food business...from the Restaurants to the TV shows....a insightful background story that is always entertaining and even though it is NSFW, it delivers a great life lesson....you never know where you will end up, and the journey can be so interesting....well done! Great narration and great story....

Woody Allen is at his best here, recounting a recurring dream that casts himself as one of history’s greatest thinkers: the imprisoned and condemned philosopher Socrates. In the face of execution, Allen’s version of Socrates is prepared for an ironic death, if not a noble one.

To listen to an old man (spittle lisping sounds and all!) read about his past, and dreams of 'Swedish stewardess' is pathetic at best....and a waste of time at worst...

Or at least that’s what Bennie believes, until she finds herself buried alive at the hands of her twin. Having never read the author, and purchased after listening to the free excerpt, it was what was promised, a serviceable, interesting listen...not great, but good enough (especially after my last two clunkers!)to keep me interested and the annoyance level was minimal....I found the narration fine, the story had enough twists and turns to keep me going and it entertained! I might even listen to it again sometime...
