Is there anything you would change about this book?

This book could've been writtin in under 400 pages, but it seems the author was concerned w/details. With the number of characters and detail it made this a long book which wasn't a good pick for a BOTM read. One of our members choose it as our monthly read, we have reveiwers in our group, and members who have personals reads they want to get to and a life...Trying to fit in a book is already a challenge but one over 400 pages is huge.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

How all the characters were connected in some way, blood, marriage or sisterhood.

What three words best describe Allyson Johnson’s performance?

    ExcitingVividblazed

Was Aftermath worth the listening time?

    Yes

"When people gladly sacrifice their time or comfort or home, it is obvious that they trust in the promises of God. Why is it that the story of someone who has actually done what Jesus commands resonates deeply with us, but we then assume we could never do anything so radical or intense? Or why do we call it radical when, to Jesus, it is simply the way it is? The way it should be?"

What made the experience of listening to Crazy Love the most enjoyable?

Knowing that the author cared enough about his readers to use his own voice, I appreciated that.

What other book might you compare Crazy Love to and why?

Spirit Rising by Jim Cymbala - this book is narrated by Jim Cymbala and its fantastic. It opens the listener up to understanding more of God in a simple way, but very real. Francis Chan has the same skill.

Have you listened to any of the narrator’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first but I have watched his videos on his site and his inflection and pace of wording is the same superior.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I believe this book changed me and my relationship with God.

A debut of extraordinary distinction: through the trials of one unforgettable family, Ayana Mathis tells the story of the children of the Great Migration, a story of love and bitterness and the promise of a new America. In 1923, 15-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented.

    Story

What a remarkable story by first time author Anaya Mathis. We journey with Hattie Shepherd and her disconnected family as they fight for a connection with her.The story opens with her newborn twins Philadelphia and Jubilee’s death from pneumonia.

As if the death of her children weren't enough Hattie’s comes to realize that her husband August, reveals himself to be a cheat and a piss poor provider. So Hattie finds happiness with another and leaves August and goes to Baltimore, but as fast as she leaves she returns, memories from her past quickly begin to prick her heart. You see, when a sick heart is longing for another it’s hard to love the ones you’re with, but it’s easier to become cold. Hattie’s children began to feel that coldness which moved into her heart, and they began to resent her.

Will they come to terms with the fact that their mom cannot love them? Is it too much to ask children to understand that you are preparing them for the hurt in the world that is sure to come?

Mathis writes a beautiful but sometimes heart wrenching story of overcoming life’s challenges. Very interesting story of family crisis, love and pain.

Where does The Story of Jesus, NIV rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is clearly one of my top listens, the subject: Jesus and the delivery was fantastic. Clear concise and no divinity degree required.

What did you like best about this story?

It helped me to understand the book of John better than my reading it as self study. I have listened to this book 2 or 3 times since buying it.

Which character – as performed by Michael Blain-Rozgay and Allison Moffett – was your favorite?

Character? Umm not sure I guess listening to Jesus tell Peter 3 times he would deny him before the crow crows was outstanding but the narrator really kept the story moving.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Praise Him..

    Any additional comments?

Even if you know the book of John experience this listen, you won't be disappointed.

The Bible is the written Word of God, and it is treasured by many. But it is also an ancient book about people and cultures very different than us. Thus, while we know we should read it, many of us have a hard time understanding the Bible.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I want to send this book to everyone I know, I wish when I started my journey I was introduced to this book, but it is never too late. I learned that reading the bible is essential as part pf a Christian life.
So much in our world is changing quickly and we have to come up with new ways to handle things, well its the same with reading the bible. Finding newness in your spirit while reading because the bible is alive and it ought to revive you. This book helps with that.

What does Rob Dean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His emphasis on certain action words and confidence in the reading made e want to pause the CD and do some research for myself.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me think more about how I read Scripture, the resources I use and how to use them us to get the most from them.

    Any additional comments?

One of my favorite quotes was "you can understand the basic message of the bible" the newspaper and some of these blogs are harder to read. Refresh your devotion time with a new improved way to reading the bible.

Grace. We talk as though we understand the term. The bank gives us a grace period. The seedy politician falls from grace. Musicians speak of a grace note. We describe an actress as gracious, a dancer as graceful. We use the word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and pre-meal prayers. We talk as though we know what grace means. But do we really understand it? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response.

Absolutely, the lessons learned on the nature of God and the principals of grace are invaluable. I love how Mr. Lucado says "don't settle for Whimpy grace" We have yet to tap into real grace, after reading this book I plan to us the tools and do it.

What other book might you compare Grace to and why?

After listening to Spirit Rising by Jim Cymbala I compare the two because of content. Valuable lessons about the Holy Spirit and Grace.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The analogies used to help the listener understand grace really was several Aha!!! moments.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It did make me smile and in some places I also laughed out loud at the sarcasm.

For some of us being a Christian is harder than it should be. Discouraged, anxious, worn down, we wonder what happened to the power and the joy that Jesus promised. Jim Cymbala believes that many of us are missing something vital. Christianity, he says, for even the best-intentioned person or church, is impossible without the Holy Spirit.

What would have made Praying God's Word better?

I couldn't finish this listen because the narrator's voice Joyce Bean didn't resonate with my spirit. I wanted so badly to finish it but only was able to get to chapter 1.

I guess in the beginning taking so much time to tell us what the book is was not necessary.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I don't know, my last 3 listens have not encouraged me at all to listen again, I will but not sure what.

What didn’t you like about Joyce Bean’s performance?

She spoke as if she was just learning to read her sentences were robotic almost mechanical.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger because I love Beth Moore's bible studies I am actally on my 3 study by her and right now week 6 of Esther: Its Tough being a Women so its not the material its the reader...

I think this one I have to return...Sorry

I would but I would need to listen to a sample first. I was expecting to hear a lesson on the Holy Spirit actions in our everyday lives, It seems this listen was filled with a lot of scripture which I could have referenced myself.

    .

Has The Holy Spirit turned you off from other books in this genre?

No not at all, I was hoping the author would talk more about the Illustrations/symbols of the Holy Spirit

Would you listen to another book narrated by Grover Gardner?

Yes, I enjoy the voice tone and pace.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Holy Spirit?

Many of the Scriptures I can reference my own bible for that. Maybe the Scriture could've ben listed in th summary/details?

    Any additional comments?

This listen left me feeling like I needed more, so I'm going to search ther titles on the Holy Spirit.
