"The Iliad"
This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the Greek Mythology. You'll get much more out of this book if you have a base knowledge of the gods, people, geography and events. Going into this book without such a base knowledge and you'll find yourself getting lost with all the names: So & so, son of that guy... Thus he spoke.
"Well done"
Yes. Excellent story how the author got from enlisting, to the mission that got Bin Laden.
The details of the assault as can be told only by someone who was there. Also, it was just another day at work for the author and his teammates.
I don't think I've listened to any of Holter's other books. I'm not sure I want to. His voice tails off too often at the end of sentences. That makes it hard to hear or understand the narrative while driving my car, with windows open. I do easily 95% of my listening in the car, so that was a problem for me. However, I buy books for what they are, not by who is narrating.
The only reaction I had was being extremely proud of our intelligence efforts and the US Navy SEALS who's team efforts removed this cancer of society from the face of the earth.
If the author revealed trade or operational secrets in the book I sure don't know what they were. I don't understand what all the negative press was all about when the book was released. I enjoyed listening and may well buy the paper copy to read again.
"Incredible"
This book was recommended to me by a veteran I met at the dog park. It parallels the video documentary "Restrepo" which is also done by Junger. He narrates his own book which gives it more emphasis and drama. This book is very well written and Junger describes the war fighters and their own personal battles, the psychology of war, what the soldiers do and why they do it. I was doubly interested in this story as it takes place in the Korrengal Valley, Paktika Province. A coworker's son was seriously injured in an ambush in Paktika a couple years ago and my Son-In-Law was the target of a suicide bomber a year ago. I'm happy to report both survived their injuries.
I found it to be a very engaging listen and highly recommend this to anyone looking for a story about the current war in Afghanistan.
"Fascinating"
This was one of those books I couldn't wait to get back to every time I had to stop listening. I was sad when I had reached the end. This is definitely one I'll listen to again.
"Incredible"
Trisha has an extremely down-to-earth way of presenting her information. Any layman can connect with what she's saying. Very informative and entertaining book. I highly recommend this book and any other authored my McConnell if you're interested in animal and dog behavior, how to train them and how to talk to them non-verbally.
"Disappointing"
I expected so much more from this book after reading the description and other reviews. I kept waiting for something to happen. I guess I expected more battle and war stories. What action that was described was little and far between and followed with substantial self guilt & pity because he blames himself for an alleged poor performance. The author can't seem to get over that. Too bad, it could have been a much better story and book. I spent 20 years in the Army myself so maybe that is why I was hoping for more than this book delivered.
"riveting"
Excellent excellent book. I augmented my listening enjoyment with Google Earth, looking at the area being described in the book.
"sehr gut!"
This book is as good as any other I've tried to use to get a grasp on the German language. It teaches words, phrases and word useage. The drawback with this and any foreign language audio book is that it cannot teach you how to read or write the language. This is a good start though.
"wow"
I tapped into a vein of information with this book. I've listened to it twice. Don't just think about getting this book, DO IT! Awesome information.
"not bad but not good"
Great story. I got a good overview of the Crimean War. In three hours you can't cover a great deal. That three hours includes music and sound effects. The music I found boring and unneccessary as it added silent length to the lecture. The sound effects were distracting and also superfluous. Not worth the price of a credit but I'm glad I listened anyway.
"he gets carried away"
This was the first Dean Koontz book I listened to and very likely the last. He gets so carried away with describing things it drove me crazy. I couldn't wait for the book to finish. 3 hours left in the book and he was still describing the main characters. If it weren't for the narrators, who did excellent jobs, I would not have finished the book.
