When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?

It would take a complete overhaul to improve this, starting with a writer who has more than three or four stock phrases at their disposal, and moving to a narrator with even reasonable vocal interest.

What was most disappointing about E L James’s story?

Where to start? The story itself? The repetitive, boring language? The completely unrealistic and predictable storyline? The impossibly boring characters?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It's hard to imagine that anything could make the story worse, but the bland voice, coupled with incredibly poor attempts to change her voice for different characters, succeeded remarkably .

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Extreme disappointment over the hours of my life wasted here that I'll never recoup.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Riddled with cliches, simultaneously predictable and unbelievable - an over-long Harlequin romance, and very disappointing.
