C.J. Box’s Open Season is a rare debut mystery that “immediately sets itself apart from the crowd” (Booklist). This thrilling novel stars Joe Pickett, a game warden in Wyoming who finds his life in danger after he looks into a murder investigation and discovers a conspiracy involving an oil pipeline and its threat to an endangered species.

My Mom recommended this author, and I decided to try him out when I needed something different to listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like the main character and the setting. While this is a quick read read, it doesn't mean it is short on plot or detail. There is a good story here and it does not get bogged down with unnecessary baggage. The narrator does a good job. I am definitely continuing with this series. I think it will provide many good hours of listening between the intense thrillers, weighty tales of morality, and deep thought provoking novels; something to clear the head, engage the mind and keep me entertained.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

This book was always on my "one day..." list. An email from audible highlighted this book and I decided there was no time like the present. I cannot say enough aout the narration of this book by Kristoffer Tabori. His voice was so perfect for this story that he really brought it to life. The story is incredible and I am now a huge fan of Jeffrey Eugenides and plan to read/listen to his other two titles. He is so good that I am sad he has written only three books, but I am glad because I am sure they are all as good as Middlesex. This is a MUST LISTEN for any audio book listener.

News of the sudden death of his childhood friend compels Jono Riley, an aging bartender and part-time actor, to return for a few days to the place where he grew up, the working-class neighborhoods of East Providence, Rhode Island. Author McLarty weaves the story of Jono's return with that of his coming-of-age in the early 1960s, including the story of some mysterious shootings.

    Suzn F says: "AOK Book"
    "Loved It"
    Overall

Best audio of 2007 (so far!) I really likd MofR, but I liked this one better. McClarty has a way with with character that really pulls you in. Admittedly the ending was a little "cliche" but I so loved the telling of the story and the people, that the weak ending didn't really bother me. McClarty proves himself a worthy storyteller (and reader) in this audio. An excellent second novel. Most writers should be so lucky.

Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

colleen says: "Another Pine Cove winner"
    "Twisted Christmas story"
    Overall

Instead of the usual sweet saccharin nostalgic christmas tale, this is the gift of magi turned on its ear with zombies and lots of truly eccentric people. This one will have you rolling on the floor laughing!

Five years after the crashof TWA Flight 800, the government has declared it a result of mechanical failure. But John Corey, an ex-NYPD detective who is now a contract agent with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is persuaded by Kate Mayfield, his wife and task force partner, that the case deserves a second look.

Ms Discus says: "Addictive mix of fact & intriguing storyline"
"good fictional story cloaked in real event"
    Overall

DeMille has taken the flight of TWA 800 and said "what if..." A plausible scenario that keeps you hooked. Not as much action as some of his other novels but keeps you interested and leaves you wanting more.

Stanley Yelnats isn't so surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a juvenile detention center. After all, his family has been ridden with bad luck ever since a one-legged gypsy put a curse on his great-great grandfather. He is told that the hard labor he must perform, digging five-foot holes in the dried up soil where Green Lake once sat, is meant to build character. But it soon becomes clear to Stanley that the warden is really using the boys to search for something very valuable.

    Jannice says: "Holes"
    "An unexpected delight!"
    Overall

The title of this book always left me uninterested. But since it was so incredibly popular with kids I decided I should check it out and it is terrific! The narrator captures the spirit of Stanley Yelnats perfectly and you can't turn it off. The ending is a pretty neat and it really illustrates the old cliche "what comes around goes around." I recommend this for young and old alike.
