Miles Vorkosigan makes his debut in this frenetic coming-of-age tale. At age 17, Miles is allowed to take the entrance exams to the elite military academy; he passes the written but manages, through miscalculation in a moment of anger, to break both his legs on the obstacle course, washing out before he begins. His aged grandfather dies in his sleep shortly after, for which Miles blames himself.

Sci-fi at its best: Fast paced plot, well-developed characters and an original universe though not too otherworldly. The book is so well received with good reason. Also, the narration is perfect.

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack is a letter addressed to Harold from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person.

Don't get me wrong: The narration was excellent in every sense.
It's the plot that deserves a slower pace: There are so many aspects of Harold's life, the past before his pilgrimage that tempted me pressing the pause-button more than once for thought. If I had read the book, I'd have for sure put it down and wander with thoughts and reflect on my and life in general constantly.
Highly recommendable for anyone who is ready to be taken on a pilgrimage in thought.

Annajane Hudgens truly believes she is over her ex-husband, Mason Bayless. They’ve been divorced for four years, she’s engaged to a new, terrific guy, and she’s ready to leave the small town where she and Mason had so much history. She is so over Mason that she has absolutely no problem attending his wedding to the beautiful, intelligent, delightful Celia. But when fate intervenes and the wedding is called to a halt as the bride is literally walking down the aisle, Annajane begins to realize that maybe she’s been given a second chance.

A predictable plot with likeable characters in the hands of an experienced author still makes 4 stars. Not my - personal - best in this genre, but still highly recommendable if you're looking for a couple of hours of easy listening.
No complaints on the narration either.

Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society.

In 1984 the novel might have been breathtaking, even a step ahead of time. 30 years later the book feels out of context. Gibson's style isn't unique anymore, parts of his story are reality and some ideas are simply outdated. This work has often been called the first cyberpunk novel. That might be, however, today remains a fairly meagre story only. And one that isn't an easy read.
I'd recommend it to everyone who does not go for the sparkling and futuristic sci-fi genre only but enjoys a detour to a more dark and critical style. From that point of view it's an addition but not a must-read.
The narration was a disappointment: Very slow and boring. Maybe on purpose but it didn't help the story at all.

Since she was a little girl, Emma Grant has always loved romance. So it's really no surprise that she has found her calling as a wedding florist. She couldn't ask for a better job. And on the surface, Emma's love life seems to be thriving. Though men swarm around her, she still hasn't found Mr. Right. The last place she's looking is right under her nose. Similar to the first book, Bed Of Roses is not the best of its genre. It's pretty simple and predictable but it works as an easy listen while driving. Yet I could not connect to the main characters, Emma and Jack. Only one thing was better than Visions In White: The narration.

In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's 1962 sci-fi classic Little Fuzzy, written with the full cooperation of the Piper Estate, Jack Holloway works alone for reasons he doesnt care to talk about. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.

Good plot twists, fast-paced and lovable alien-creatures. Highly entertaining book. Likewise Scalzi could have written a thriller about economy, exploitation and environment. Yet he focused on entertainment which makes the book an easy read but with very real truths behind the fictional story.
The narration itself is good, however, be prepared that the story is truly read to you, therefore you hear many, many "he said" and "she said."
I didn't listen to the original by Piper. Maybe at another time but it makes no sense to me hearing the story - even in a variation - in immediate succession.

I don't mind unrealistic plot twists in romance novels, however, these only work if you have credible, i.e. well developed characters. And these are absent in this book. The leading characters are flat and in the best case drafts.
I was relieved when it was finished. The narration was OK but couldn't save the book.
