  • The Last Hawk: Saga of the Skolian Empire, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Catherine Asaro
    • Narrated By Anna Fields

When Kelric, a scion of the imperial family of Skolia, crash-lands his fighter on the off-limits planet of Coba, he figures it will be only a short time before he makes his way home. But he fails to account for the powerful matriarchy of Coba, the mistresses of the great estates who do not want the Empire to know about their recent cultural advances. First they take him prisoner. Then, one by one, the most powerful women on the planet fall in love with him!

Stuart says: "Reader in a bit of a hurry"
    "Coulda been better told"

This plot was conceptually excellent, but the manner in which the story was told was arrogant and IMO the author missed an opportunity to explore an interesting idea. I'm a fairly bright person and I've read science fiction since I was old enough to read. But, I was clearly not in this author's intended audience.

The narrator took a little getting used to. She read well and added a nice layer of texture to the story, but something about her intensity reminded me of Captain Janeway.

This is an excellent book to use for a drinking game. The rule was more than 4 syllables take a drink. Word of caution: Since there are so many wonderful polysyllabic words in this book you can avoid a second listen if you pick just one. Dodecahedron worked well.

  • Life

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Keith Richards, James Fox
    • Narrated By Johnny Depp, Joe Hurley
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Now at last Keith Richards pauses to tell his story in the most anticipated autobiography in decades. And what a story! Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records in a coldwater flat with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones, building a sound and a band out of music they loved. Finding fame and success as a bad-boy band, only to find themselves challenged by authorities everywhere....

    Jesse says: "Ins and outs"
    "I like the Stones, but..."

the best I can give this is "meh". The content was OK for the most part, however parts of the story were too esoteric to interest me (I really don't care about the 5-string open tuning). I like the way Keith Richards portrayed himself and addressed his relationship with the Stones and Mick Jagger. I probably would have given it three stars had it been read by someone else. Johnny Depp's pacing was off; you could tell where the sentence broke on the page by the way he read the text. Joe Hurley was difficult to understand and he wandered in and out of really odd accents. The book would change viewpoints, and the listener wouldn't be able to easily pick up on that. It would usually be prefaced by "Let's let so-and-so tell that part" and at the conclusion, the story would switch back to Keith Richards' viewpoint and the listener wouldn't have any clue that that had happened. I found myself backing up to catch the transition. It created a disjointed listening experience.

  • Proven Guilty: The Dresden Files, Book 8

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Jim Butcher
    • Narrated By James Marsters
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

    Darran says: "Great listening experience"
"You can listen out order, but..."

Books 6 and 7 aren't published in audiobooks until April 2010. I've heard 1 thru 5 - I'll just skip to book 8. Skipping ahead didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story, but it's clear that things have happened in Harry's live that would have increased my enjoyment of the story. There are a number of references to previous adventures (that I hope will be covered in 6 and 7) that would have helped me understand, not necessarily what was going on, but why it was happening the way it was happening. All that aside, I needed a Dresden fix. This is a thoroughly entertaining story, and I'll get to listen to it again after I've heard 6 and 7.

  • Shards of Honor

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Lois McMaster Bujold
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

I>Shards of Honor is the novel in which Lois McMaster Bujold introduced the science-fiction world to Barrayar and Aral Vorkosigan, Beta Colony and Cordelia Naismith. From this beginning the author has created a multigenerational saga spanning time as well as space. Bujold is generally recognized as the current exemplar of the character-based science-fiction adventure story.

Lifelong Reader says: "First story in the Miles Vorkosigan series"
"Nice to get the earlier books..."

Anyone who has enjoyed reading about Miles and Ivan and their adventures will love this book. Each story about Miles has told bits and pieces of his parent's story - enough to support whatever Miles is doing at the moment but never enough to get to know Arl and Cordelia. This story delves deeper into their characters and how they met. We also get to know a little about the Sargent and understand better why he was the way he was. Coming into this series backward, it's nice to see that Miles is a composite of his parents. Had I encountered this story before any of the stories about Miles, it would have been less interesting. Part of the fun is to look for people who you know are in future books (like Arty Mayhew!).

  • Outlander

    • UNABRIDGED (33 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Diana Gabaldon
    • Narrated By Davina Porter
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Sara says: "The Time Travel VS Romance Quandary"
    "Gothic romance novel"

This is a romance novel, and not very interesting past the hole in time. The two main characters spent a lot of time in bed, or talking about going to bed, worrying about why things didn't work in bed.

What saved this story was the narrator. She was wonderful. She brought what life there was into the story.

  • The Rolling Stones

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Robert A. Heinlein
    • Narrated By David Baker, the Full Cast Family

It doesn't seem likely for twins to have the same middle name. Even so, it's clear that Castor and Pollux Stone both have "Trouble" written in that spot on their birth certificates. Of course, anyone who's met their grandmother Hazel would know that they came by it honestly.

George says: "Good Fun, Good Science"

I wasn't expecting this to be presented in this manner, but it was well done and entertaining. It was definitely in the spirit of a Heinlen story.
