Disregard this review if you must because I didn't listen very long. It became clear to me that I should have read other books in the series or something before this one. This was not the best use of a credit for me.

Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were unlikely boyhood friends. Larry was the child of lower middle-class white parents, Silas the son of a poor, single, black mother - their worlds as different as night and day. Yet a special bond developed between them in Chabot, Mississippi. But within a few years, tragedy struck. In high school, a girl who lived up the road from Larry had gone to the drive-in movie with him and nobody had seen her again.

Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

I've listened to this book ever spring for almost a decade I think! It's phenomenal. Barbara Kingsolver is a master and the characters are incredibly well-developed and lovable. The book is sexy without being the kind of thing you are uncomfortable listening to at the gym. It's inspiring and the bird sounds between the chapter are a delight. If you've never listened to Kingsolver, this is a great introduction and if you've read her other books, you won't be disappointed by this one.

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

This is the one series I can come back to again and again. Harry Bosch just doesn't get old for me (although the character is certainly a lot older than he was at book 1). Michael Connelly is entertaining and philosophical. Harry Bosch is the rightful heir to the long tradition of detectives expressing the philosophical position of Albert Camus's character of the doctor in the book The Plague. And if you don't care about that stuff but you want an entertaining detective novel, Connelly doesn't disappoint. This character has a lot of heart.

Mercedes Hildebrand Ware is a member beyond reproach...until her life begins to unravel. When her husband betrays her, steals her money, and runs off to places unknown, it's something Frede would prefer to keep under wraps. The last thing she needs is to become fodder for the JLWC gossip mill. And to make matters worse, there's only one person in town who stands a chance at helping her get revenge - Howard Grout, a tasteless, gold-chain-wearing lawyer who has bought his way into Frede's tony neighborhood.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

I really enjoyed this book overall, but it isn't just about hiking - it's about coming into adulthood (not young adulthood - real adulthood) and setting aside grief and sorrow. I really enjoyed the author's honesty and the glimpses into the experience of hiking the PCT, something I may never do. I loved the details of life on the trail most of all. I had a hard time with the part of the story that dealt with how she ended up on the trail after her mother's death and her marriage fell apart and like others have said - the bit about the horse was agonizing. I will say, I called my mom a few times while listening, just to say hello.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

I really enjoyed this dark novel. It has great twists and turns and I won't say more about that so I don't ruin it for you. The narration was fine, but not amazing. Neither voice was annoying, at least to me.

Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the 20th century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts’, suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, however: Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals.

This was very entertaining. It had some Jane Austen and some Edith Wharton elements but overall it was its own book. The maid's perspective was a fresh approach although her character wasn't completely developed. But all in all, this was a great listen and got me through many hours at the gym and cleaning the house! I'll watch for more titles from this author.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"

This was a fantastic book/audiobook. It was engaging and smart and beautiful and the narrators were out-of-this-world good. I don't want to finish it but I've only got 35 minutes left. I'll honestly miss these characters when I finish it.
