Sometimes 'listening' to non-fiction is very difficult but this performance was excellent and while it is a complex book the story is so well constructed and the performance so strong it is an outstanding listen. Worth every minute - I intend to buy the physical book as well, it is that important.
What a fantastic book. The story is so compelling, it is better than fiction. The author (Brown) took a compelling story, and made it spellbinding. Perhaps one of my top 5 audible reads - truly fantastic. The performance is spot-on. I have heard Hermann before on other narrative non-fiction and he has always been superb, and he again delights the listener. You'll never want it to end - but it does, with the same beauty as the rest of the book.
This book is a bit of a stretch - it seemed like this story was merely a way to set up the author's future plans for the husband/wife characters, but the 'cop drama' portion fringes on unbelievable. However, hang in there, book 4 dramatically improves and you need this to understand the evolution of the lead characters.
I am convinced that the prior reviews were all written by close friends, who meant well, but are desperately misleading. It is nothing more than a boring journal about a fairly harmless mid-life "mans search for meaning". Skip it -
I came to this book via the performer - who is simply one of the best I've ever heard. I did enjoy the story very much, but I will say the ending was a bit abrupt. Yet, well worth the time.
Delicious, eloquent writing with deep characters and a very satisfying ending. The performance, above all, was spectacular. Worth every minute.
I finished this book the weekend the author died. My sympathies to the family. It the author lived his life as thoughtful as his writing he was a wonderful being I am sure.
The characters and the proses are beautifully crafted, I loved the writing. But if you listen, expect a very subtle overlay of simple stories that unfold slowly. There is no big dramatic moment, anywhere; rather it is beautiful writing about people you could know, trying to figure out their lives that occasionally intersect.
I love this author, and think this is a very important historical topic with current application. Well worth the time. I will definitely look for this performer - excellent job.
It is unusual in some ways, although not a unique format. It took me a bit to get into the book, but I am glad I stuck with it. I very much enjoyed the book, although I agree with some of the other reviews, the ending is a bit of a disappointment. The performance is outstanding and the book is a worthwhile listen. I would read other books by this author.
This is a good book, but the lead character isn't as endearing as 'Joe' in the first book in the series. Having said that it is well written, an interesting story line and a great performance.
Well I must say the 'crime' element of the book is a stretch. Yes, I know a group crime happened in a small CA town, but this book took that idea to a goofy place. However, I do like the characters, the writing is strong as is the performance. I understand how some of the other reviews are harsh, but I still recommend the book.
