I love Mrs. Pollifax her stories seem current and with the narration of Barbara Rosenblat I can be transported back to the 60s and have the fun of all those spy novels without the tech they have today.

It started with the murder of Kinsey Millhone's sometime drinking buddy, an insurance claims adjuster. But before long Kinsey stumbles onto a massive insurance scam. Going undercover as a wisecracking vamp, Millhone descends into the Los Angeles nether world of machismo and gang hideouts. Her companion, terrified at having crossed the violent crook Raymond Maldonado, is Bibianna Diaz, no Girl Scout herself.

    James says: "Abrupt Ending!"
"I liked the story but it had a little canned feel"

There was a bit of TV format to the book. It was a good storyline and was performed well. The undercover work had more substance than usual. All in all not a waste of time.

  • Lord of the Silent: The Amelia Peabody Series, Book 13

    Story
    (128)

Undeterred by world war and enemy submarines, Amelia Peabody, grandmaster Elizabeth Peters' indomitable archaeologist-sleuth, once again sets sail for Egypt, where ghosts of an ancient past and specters of a present-day evil hover silently over an inscrutable land.

    Nancy says: "Unabridged is unacceptable"
    "better than average abridgment"
    Overall

I hate abridgements but felt this better than most. I don't know if Ms Peters had developed the characters so fully in previous novels that I could sort of fill in the blanks a little. I wish though that the rest of her novels could be narrated unabridged.

After two London men end their business partnership, one of them is savagely murdered in a medieval tithe barn on his estate in Somerset. Investigating the killing, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge discovers that the victim was universally despised in Cambury - even the victim's wife and the town's police inspector are suspect. And yet in London circles, the man was highly regarded. What triggered his death?

Marie says: "Entertaining procedural through the end"
    "Enjoyed this book."
    Overall

I loved the feel of this book almost like an Agetha Christie. The twists and turns of plot kept me entertained all the way throught.

Meet Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. Desperate for work, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, she cons her way into a job as an "apprehension agent" for a bail bondsman. This best selling debut earned Evanovich nominations for the Edgar, Anthony, Agatha, Shamus, and Macavity awards.

Connie says: "Abridged......Left out so much!"
    "Should not be abridged."
    Overall

It is a good thing I read a sequel first and got interested in the series. The story line is good however the abridgment leaves a lot to be desired. I could just as well have watched TV.
