At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

If you could sum up The Hiding Place in three words, what would they be?

    Inspiring, comforting, frightening

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Nollie ten Boom, Corrie's sister.

What does Wanda McCaddon bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

    Her lovely voice. I'm dsylexic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me want the walk of faith in Jesus that Corrie and her family had.

    Any additional comments?

It's easier to tell the truth when it will cost you just your life. But when it could cost others theirs? Yet Jesus is supposed to be Truth. Fascinating book. I was struck with Corrie's sister Nollie. She didn't lie.

  • The Best Crime Stories Ever Told

When acclaimed mystery writer Dorothy L. Sayers first began compiling anthologies of the best crime stories in the 1920s and ’30s, the genre was in the flush of its first golden age. While it is hard to imagine today - after every possible mystery plot has been told, retold, subverted, and played straight again by hundreds of writers over nearly a century - in Sayers’s day there were still twists that had never been seen, and machinations of crime that would shock even jaded Jazz Age fans.

Robin Bloodworth has almost singlehandedly ruined one of my favorite genres. The stories are intriguing, but I can't get past that voice. Fake British accent, drawling to the point of driving someone, who loves legit British accents, mad. In his regular voice he sounds OK American. I'm a diehard Sayers fan. Or at least I was.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". In this holiday-themed short story, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson, follow the trail of a lost hat and a Christmas goose through the streets of London and into a rapidly expanding mystery.

Alan Cumming is an awesome actor. But his narrative skill on the Blue Carbuncle was flat. Even just straight reading in his native accent would have been preferable.

Amity Whitford dared to stake her own claim on the endless plains of Western Kansas. She built her homestead, Dove's Nest, with her bare hands. But the ravages of the sun and drying winds took their toll.

I enjoy a good romantic historial novel. I have seldom been this bored with an audiobook. I had no sympathy for the heroine and I guessed the ending by about the first or second chapter. It took an unbelievable amount of time for her to smarten up. This was not an inexpensive purchase. I would recommend not wasting money on it.
