In Rip-Off!, 13 of today’s best and most honored writers of speculative fiction face a challenge even they would be hard-pressed to conceive: Pick your favorite opening line from a classic piece of fiction (or even non-fiction) - then use it as the first sentence of an entirely original short story.

If you could sum up Rip-Off! in three words, what would they be?

    A fun read.

What other book might you compare Rip-Off! to and why?

Stephen King, when he goes deeper into sci fi.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Each story had different narrators, and yes, I'd heard some of them before. Can't remember who off hand.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No. I commute with it.

    Any additional comments?

Some of the stories will stay with me forever. The one about the lady astronaut. And the one about what happened when God created the earth. Interesting heartfelt writing.

  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book if my friend has a sensitive stomach. The author spend a great deal of time on the end result of digestion. I teach the Digestive System to my 4th graders, but it was still too much for me. Maybe if I didn't listen to the book while driving to school in the morning, eating breakfast in the car!

Were the concepts of this book easy to follow, or were they too technical?

    Easy to follow.

Have you listened to any of Emily Woo Zeller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't think I have heard her before. But she was excellent.

Was Gulp worth the listening time?

    A qualified yes.

    Any additional comments?

I learned a lot of interesting trivia about the history of the science of the digestive system, and the culture surrounding it.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It reads well - the writer is good - but it feels like a one of the not-great Stephen King novels I so love - and I would rate it among the bottom. A good try, but a little too fantastic. The build-up to the problem's discovery is much better than the problem itself. But it has a nice ending. If you can get through the Squales you might like it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I liked it. It was satisfying and touching.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

All of them. He is a master narrator. Please tell him for me. It's so important! He brought life to an otherwise mediocre book.

Could you see 14 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    I hope not.

    Any additional comments?

Hang in there until the very nice, human, ending.

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty is a powerful saga of three generations of women, plagued by hardships and torn by a devastating secret, yet inextricably joined by the bonds of family. Fifteen-year-old Mosey Slocumb-spirited, sassy, and on the cusp of womanhood-is shaken when a small grave is unearthed in the backyard, and determined to figure out why it's there. Liza, her stroke-ravaged mother, is haunted by choices she made as a teenager. But it is Jenny, Mosey's strong and big-hearted grandmother....

If you could sum up A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty in three words, what would they be?

Homespun tale of women and the pressures they face - growing up, motherhood, connections you might expect to have to have but find out not so important. Ties that bind families are stronger than ties that bind by blood - unexpected plot twists and very, very satisfying. Ms. Jackson's use of the language is clever and heartfelt and this is a novel not to be missed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty?

Climax - when Big confronts her tormentor.

Which character – as performed by Joshilyn Jackson – was your favorite?

There was no one favorite - but the way she read Mosey was exceptional.

Who was the most memorable character of A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty and why?

Big. Great, fully developed and outlined character. I could see all the characters - but especially Big.

    Any additional comments?

I loved, loved, loved this book!
