This book isn't for everyone!!! Lots of explicit language & crazy stories. But it is also touching & honest. I lost track of how many times I laughed out loud listening to Penn's crazy stories. His thoughts on facing death (without the hope of an afterlife) are surprisingly helpful & reassuring. I'd like to hear Penn put together a thorough talk on his observations & criticisms of religious belief. I bet it would be powerful. In this & his other book on atheism he airs some of his views, but they are mixed in with many semi- & completely unrelated (usually laugh-out-loud funny) stories that only he could tell.
this blew me away. lately i've been on a spy-novel book kick, and somehow i saw "damn few". wow. just wow. i guess if i had to guess what the very best US warriors went through to be trained, and what they did in combat, this book spells it out and makes it real.
i cannot relate, but i am thankful.
this author is, dare i say, a true american. he's a gentleman and well read. he's also a killing machine and proud of it. proud to serve, that is.
if this seems a little interesting - get it. you will not be disappointed!
it was well spent in light of the content & history that i learned. unfortunately it was also very painful due to the overly dramatic and affected narration.
my high school classmate who was dyslexic and a terrible stutterer.
I would buy a book (by Greenblatt) where the tasty quotes from Lucretius were pulled out and given more explanation/examination.
The story is perfect for young readers, boys & girls alike. The plot & created world are unique, as are the main characters. The reader is really good. I cannot think of a better performance on any other Audible book I've heard, period.
Hitch is a very good reader & since he's not with us any more, it's powerful to hear him narrate his book.
The tidbits about Joseph Smith (Mormonism) are funny & devastating.
His comments on the Arabic language & how that impacts the Korans message were new to me.
His personality & intelligence shine through.
I might. I'm sure there were portions I didn't fully absorb, and the plot & characters are complex, which would make a second listen likely to be enjoyable.
He does a good job with the male characters & reading in general, but he is TERRIBLE at reading the female parts. His feeble falsetto is very painful to listen to.
Supremely interesting and accessible look at the New Testament unlike anything you learned in Sunday school! Until you study this book, you will probably be sadly ignorant about the NT... the conflicting stories, the question of who wrote what when, the difference between the life Jesus taught and the religion created about Jesus. Whether you are a part time Christian, or hard core Evangelical, you may never hear a more interesting story! Highly recommended!
