This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

After listening to and reading all of Bryce Courtenay's works, I was lost to find another read as consuming as his. Well, I found another, Gregory David Roberts. I felt I was there, actually walking beside him in his sorrows, loves and tribulations. Humphrey Bower as usual, gives this narration an unbelieveable reality in both the characters and the story's flow.

Fun While It Lasted is the story of Bruce McNall's life as a player. McNall started in the ancient coin business. Soon, he branched out into horse racing, movies, and major league sports as owner of the L.A. Kings hockey team. Ultimately his empire collapsed amid charges of fraud and deception, and he was sent to prison for admittedly bilking banks out of more than $200 million. Here is the tale of how he played fast and loose in Hollywood.

Being a Canadian and a hockey fan now living in Arizona I felt compelled to try and find out the real story behind losing our National Treasure. Not only did I believe the McNall side, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the ride of an entrepreneur. Good luck Bruce, I hope you have learned from your mistakes.
