The Roman Republic was the most remarkable state in history. What began as a small community of peasants camped among marshes and hills ended up ruling the known world. Rubicon paints a vivid portrait of the Republic at the climax of its greatness - the same greatness which would herald the catastrophe of its fall. It is a story of incomparable drama.

This book is so well done. The narrator was fantastic and his performance was phenomenal. I love a good story, and this story is great. The drama is brought to life with great detail. You love characters and hate others. For anyone who is a fan of history and the talented Romans who built it, this is a must read.

How have the crusades contributed to Islamist rage and terrorism today? Were the crusades the Christian equivalent of modern jihad? In this sweeping yet crisp history, Thomas F. Madden offers a brilliant and compelling narrative of the crusades and their contemporary relevance.

Where does The New Concise History of the Crusades rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is a great overview of the Crusades and their historical significance. By its own admission it is not extremely in depth which I think is helpful, it gives you an overview of the story. Some specific instances of battles and their consequences. It doesn't get bogged down in any minutia that some historians feel the need to do.

I was very glad the book went into the the role the Mongols played in the Crusades whom I have studied quite a bit.

The narrator did an excellent job and really kept the flow of the book going well. If you are like me and listen on the iOS Audible app at 2x or 3x speeds, Claton Butcher's voice easily handles the speed increase without sounding clipped.

    Enjoy this book.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This is an interesting take of Ghengis Khan and his descendants. The author doesn't focus on the barbarian aspect of it, and seems to tone down the violence and slaughter that the Mongels are known for. I don't know that I fully believe it, but it was interesting and well done none-the-less.

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to read a take on the greatest conqueror in world history.

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor").

What did you like best about this story?

Gaffigan is hilarious. He delivers this book so well, and keeps you laughing for 5 hours straight.

    Any additional comments?

This book takes you (hilariously) through the thoughts of being a single guy, to the lifestyle of a father of toddlers. I couldn't stop laughing, and thinking throughout the book. Highly recommend.

The good news is that the vast majority of soldiers are loath to kill in battle. Unfortunately, modern armies, using Pavlovian and operant conditioning have developed sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. The psychological cost for soldiers, as witnessed by the increase in post-traumatic stress, is devastating.

This book was intriguing, fascinating, convicting, and sobering. I was expecting a book tht was glorify heroic battles, but it wasn't why I got. Instead I received a fascinating journey through the killing process and how modern military training makes today's armies of infantry much more deadly than their predecessors.

It also is a cautionary tale for parents, politicians, and media types who cause their positions to protect our children from violence towards their fellow man, and urges us as a nation to re-sensitize ourselves and our children.

I highly, highly recommend and encourage you to listen to this book read by the author himself.

There are only two paths in life: average and awesome. The average path is easy because all you have to do is nothing. The awesome path is more challenging, because things like fear only bother you when you do work that matters. The good news is Start gives listeners practical, actionable insights to be more awesome, more often.
