"running blind with a surprise around the corner"
The story line was great and McClain brought it to life.
I enjoyed the many twists to the story line, just when it would start to get lost in details a new turn was added. I also liked the attitude towards the FBI.
Reacher was my favorite character, what guy doesn't see himself as the tragic hero.
I will be listening to this again.
"the South continues to stand!"
I have enjoyed the movie from the first time I saw it many years ago, but never took the time to read the book. As usual the book is much better than the movie, yet the experience of seeing the movie so many times lent to a more enjoyable listen.
This was my first time for listening to Linda Stephens and she was a true joy. She brought the story to life in a most wonderful manner.
This was one of my best used credits!
"look twice because the train is coming!"
I would listen to The Affair again because I like all the twists and turns in the plot that I have come to expect from Lee Child.
As always I like Reacher, probably because I see myself as a loaner always on the move.
At first I didn't like Dick Hill's reading, but now I have come to enjoy the edge he brings to the story.
The one extreme reaction I had to this story was one of disgust in that the sex scenes seemed way to graphic and didn't need to be presented in that manner to add to the plot. I think it cheapened the story and is why I only gave it 4 stars. If I wanted that kind of listening I would be purchasing it. I have listened to 16 of the books (skipping the one that had such negative reviews of his portrayal of the military) and this was out of the ordinary. I hope Lee Child hasn't given into the publishers idea of sex sells. I just want Reacher to be Reacher righting wrongs for those who couldn't on their own.
I also enjoyed the extras at the end of the story. It was a real treat to be given a glimpse into Reacher's childhood.
"From out of the fire into the frying pan!"
I would recommend this book to a friend because I enjoyed the characters growing, taking the risk to step up and stand up for what is right. I also enjoyed the twists in the plot that made it harder to get ahead of the story in my mind.
I enjoyed using trucks as a 'guided' missile firebomb. I never would have thought of that.
"Babylon has fallen, and she is getting up!"
It is hard for me to rank any book, but I definitely would rate this as one near the top of my list. While it was written years ago, the reactions of the characters still are valid for our times, provoking thought and introspection. But what really made it enjoyable was the narrator.
I enjoyed watching the growth of the main characters juxtaposed with the descent into base animalistic living of others.
I can't single out one character, but rather want to say Patton has one of the most pleasant, engaging voices of all the narrators I have listened too. I will be looking for other books just to hear his presentation.
When the little girl discovered the hidden room, and music came back into their lives, was one of my favoirte moments. She became the hero she wanted to be just by being curious little girl.
This book also struck a chord for me as I grew up near Omaha and the other bases and missile silos in the area. The reality of living near a definite target area helped me begin to fight the fog of addiction and draw closer to a Higher Power, which eventually became God.
"frighteningly real"
It was a very plausible plot and I enjoyed the view from a family with an ill child. I wonder what would happen to me with all my illnesses if this happened - certain death in a short time.
The plot was very gripping and I think a realistic portrayal of society breaking down after such a life changing event.
the freedom to travel and listen
are you ready for the world as you know it to stop
I wish our government would take this possibility seriously.
"listening to film noir"
This was my first experience of this series and of Lee Child's solo work. I almost stopped listening to the book because of the narrator's voice. Once I decided it was like a campy detective film, it was easier to listen to the remainder of the book. I enjoyed the story line and the twists in the plot.
The plot did keep my attention, especially how Reacher kept out of the hands of the police.
dull, boring, campy
This book has peaked my curiosity about Reacher and I will be exploring the remainder of the series.
"Pendergast strikes again!"
I enjoy books but lately have come to relish the joy of being read to. The audio books also allow me to do other things while being entertained.
I liked to finally hear about and meet Pendergast's wife.
It is hard to pick a favorite seen, but the climax in the park was great.
I did want to listen to it in one sitting, but then made my self stretch it out in order to savor it.
"I was hoping for more"
This seems to be a veiled attack on Christianity more than a book about struggling to live after an EMP event.
I will continue to listen to other books about life after an apocalyptic event.
Todd McLaren's style and pace are very easy to listen to, and are why I continued to listen as long as I did.
It is hard to say which characters are my favorite or which ones I would cut. I have only listened to about half of the first segment and have had enough. Just when I get into the story, the author finds an opportunity to explain how Wiccan beliefs are better than Christian. This was not what I was looking for in a book.
"I am sorry I wasted my money"
the narrator was very difficult to listen to, and after a few hours into the second download I just deleted it
I kept hoping the book would spring to life for me, but it didn't; I don't know if it is the flow of the writing or the narration, probably the narration more than anything else was the turn off for me. Even though it seemed to drag, I would probably listend to the end with another reader.
I didn't like his accent, or weak attempt to change his voice with different characters
Over all I was disappointed because I could see the potential of the story line, but just couldn't get through the narration. I wish I had listned more closely to the sample instead of paying attention to the description of the novel.
