The story follows the life of Tina, a young woman caught between the mother who adopted her - the beautiful, upstanding Delia - and her true mother, her plain, unmarried ‘aunt’ Charlotte, who gave Tina up to provide her with a socially acceptable life. The three women live quietly together until Tina’s wedding day, when Delia’s and Charlotte’s hidden jealousies rush to the surface.

What made the experience of listening to The Old Maid the most enjoyable?

If the author is Wharton it is a classic. This story has been told before and since but each author shares their particular flavor of writing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Old Maid?

For me it is the question of why the girl cannot be beloved by both. For she was beloved by both. Why does there always have to be a bad guy. I understood the emotional struggle but just once can we not write a story in which all are magnamous.
*The moment Adeline makes the decision Charlotte cannot marry. And follows thru on that decision by changing the rest of her life. I had to wonder about the emotions leading to that. That could have been the wall remaining a lifetime. Maybe Charlotte regretted sharing her secret with her most trusted relative. Or maybe she savored telling her. This book could be discussed a lot.

Have you listened to any of Eleanor Bron’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first with this narrator. I had some problems separating the characters by sound.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes I did.

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy. So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves. Complicated? Awkward? Completely. But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary.

What made the experience of listening to Flat-Out Love the most enjoyable?

If you have never suffered a loss so horrible you cannot accept the reality, you may think this is beyond what can happen. I can't say I enjoyed this book, I figured it out pretty early on, but I had to know what happened to the characters. I believe this story was well written and well narrated.

What other book might you compare Flat-Out Love to and why?

Easy by Tammara Webber, sort of.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She is a very very good narrator. I have listened to her in several stories. She is easy to listen to and gives each person a voice allowing me to separate the characters easily.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I cried. I laughed too.

    Any additional comments?

Worth the credit. I admit the titled bothered me until I the light bulb went off and I realized "Flat Fin".

A chance meeting with a charming Frenchman in Bucharest changes her travel plans forever. Acting on impulse, she agrees to visit Fredric in Paris for a week. Put a very French Frenchman together with a strong-willed Australian girl and the result is some spectacular - and often hilarious - cultural clashes.

Where does Almost French rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Rankings are hard, let's see. I am pretty sure I will listen to it again even if just to listen to Caroline Lee. This is my favorite book about Paris and actually living there. I have bought several and found them trite, boring or ridiculous. Somewhere in the top 100, for now.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Almost French?

The 40th birthday party for Frederic. Vacationing with him in Australia...hilarious. The job covering fashion week. Her interview with the designer. The party where she gave up on the hosts and served the champagne.

What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Caroline Lee is among my top 5 narrators. She elevates everything she reads. I absolutely love her voice. She is able to bring a story to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I believe the total work from her struggle to decide to move there, and everything she endured and grew from each experience she found herself. I admired her tenacity I know I would have left. I am certain it was her love for Frederic but she didn't really talk about that very much.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book, I measure that by whether I am able to listen straight through or I stop it often. I listened to this pretty much straight thru, I asked myself if it was the narration or the story. I enjoyed it and it doesn't really matter. It was memorable, I will listen to it again. Worth the credit. Thank you.

self respect does not come in this package. I don't like this trend, I don't like young women thinking this is the way to be treated. I love excitement as much as the next person but this is not the path. I bought this for I think 2.00, not worth a nickel.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I have been looking for books based in France. Being severly visually impaired I loved the concept presented of a 16 year old blind girl, her father built a replica of Paris, she memorized it. Only in a book. But this book was about mans inhumanity to man/women/children, I couldn't handle it. It was mental suffering for me, also I couldn't keep some the characters separated. For me, it was just too depressing.. the writing seemed good. I couldn't handle the content.

I wanted to know how they worked things out. It is worth the credit. A good listen. A good narrator. I love good dialog and this one was good.

The narrator was also very professional. I liked it and it was worth the credit but something I cannot put my finger on was missing. I have no idea what. I listened in one sitting. She know how to write a memorable love story and I love that! Great narration.
