First most of this info has been published many times before. Second and I admit this is personal but the delivery of this author/narrator is such that I found it difficult/impossible to take him seriously. I personally didn't think this book had merit. But possibly if a different narrator gave the information more weight.

For Larison, a man off the grid and on the run, the sleepy northern California town of Arcata, gateway to the state's fabled Lost Coast, seems like a perfect place to disappear for a while. But Arcata isn't nearly as sleepy as it seems, and when three locals decide Larison would make a perfect target for their twisted sport, Larison exacts a lifetime of vengeance in one explosive evening.

Any tender feelings I had for Larison from the Treven series were snuffed with this short story. I cannot imagine why Barry Eisler felt the need to write this disgusting bag of garbage.

Even for an average citizen, a love triangle is dangerous business. For assassin John Rainn - "one of the most compelling lead characters in the genre" (USA Today) it's going to be downright deadly. When Rain learns that his former lover, Midori, has been raising their child in New York, Rain senses a chance for reconciliation, perhaps even for redemption. But Midori and the child are being watched by Rain's enemies, and Rain's sudden appearance puts them in terrible danger. To save them, Rain is forced to use the same deadly talents he had been hoping to leave behind.

    Story

The conflict in this story is so gut wrenching. Wow, make time because I don't think you will want to be interrupted. There is so much in this story I cannot put my thoughts down. It was well written, human, vulnerable, and ultimately painful. I am not sure how Barry Eisler has managed to make the killer human but he is. This entire series has been such a wonderful pleasure filled time for me. I didn't like The Descendants as much until I read Ben Treven's series. I understand better now and can appreciate how it was written. I just think Mr. Eisler is an awesome writer and narrator.

Torture. Ghost Detainees. And a massive cover-up that continues even today. Marooned in a Manila jail after a bar fight fatality, black ops soldier Ben Treven gets a visit from his former commander, Colonel Scott Horton, who explains the price of Ben's release: find and eliminate Daniel Larison, a rogue operator from Ben's unit who has stolen 92 torture tapes from the CIA and is using them to blackmail the U.S. government. But other players are after the tapes, too.

I understand The Detachment better now, unfortunately cannot redo my review. I highly recommend you read the John Rains s & the Ben Trven books in order. I didn't do that and while I have enjoyed all of them. I believe I would have appreciated the nuances and events better if I had read in proper sequence. This story was tense & makes us paranoid about government. But the relationships are the story. Excellent narration.

John Rain is back. And “the most charismatic assassin since James Bond” (San Francisco Chronicle) is up against his most formidable enemy yet: the nexus of political, military, media, and corporate factions known only as the Oligarchy. When legendary black ops veteran Colonel Scott “Hort” Horton tracks Rain down in Tokyo, Rain can’t resist the offer: a multi-million dollar payday for the “natural causes” demise of three ultra-high-profile targets who are dangerously close to launching a coup in America. But the opposition on this job is going to be too much for even Rain to pull it off alone.

I didn't like the premise of this story. Not the way I could imagine John Rains. While Rains is a known killer. But all the other books talked about a man that was much smarter than this. Maybe it was they were killing Americans on America's soil...not sure but I didn't enjoy this book.

All John Rain wants is to get out of the killing business. But with his discretion, his reliability, and his unique talent for death by "natural causes," no one is willing to let him just retire. So when an old nemesis from the Japanese national police force comes to him with a new job - eliminate Murakami, a killer even more fearsome than Rain himself - Rain knows he can't refuse. Aided by an achingly desirable half Brazilian, half Japanese exotic dancer he knows he shouldn't trust, Rain pursues his quarry into the heart of a shadow war between the CIA and the yakuza.

I am new to BE's writing and to suspense generally. I have a bad reaction to listening to torture. However, I think I really love John Rains as a character. This book like all the others in the series is well written. I have spent several days devouring these stories. I thought I might get tired of them but no...there is something in each one that intrigues me to the point I need to find out what happens. Thoroughly enjoy BE's narration. Great entertainment...thank you.

What makes a legendary assassin? For John Rain, it was the lessons of love, war, and betrayal he learned in Tokyo in 1972. Fresh from the killing fields of Southeast Asia, Rain works as a bagman under the watchful eye of his CIA handler, delivering cash to corrupt elements of the Japanese government. But when a delivery goes violently wrong, Rain finds himself in the crosshairs of Japan’s most powerful yakuza clan.

    Story

It could be a book impresses you due to timing, I am sick of romance. Many writers of suspense are too gory for me. I love good narration. It is rare to find an author with such a gift for narration. This story grabbed me and I loved it. Now I have to listen to all of them. This book was well written. I won't forget this one!
