On March 23, 2003, Private First Class Jessica Lynch was crossing the Iraqi desert with the 507th Maintenance Company when the convoy she was traveling in was ambushed, caught in enemy crossfire. All four soldiers traveling with her died in the attack. Lynch was taken prisoner and held captive in an Iraqi hospital for nine days. Her rescue galvanized the nation; she became a symbol of victory, of innocence and courage, of heroism; and then, just as quickly, of deceit and manipulation.

I couldn't stop listening to it. I had to bring it in to work to finish it. Very uplifting knowing all she had to put up with. It's good to know that there are still good strong people around like Jessica, her family, and community. The writing brought this out perfectly.

Good narrator. The voice and accent were right on for this story.

  • Johann Sebastian Bach: 1685 - 1750

Johann Sebastian Bach has been called the father of Western music; precise and incredibly prolific, his works fill 52 volumes. He was an obstinate but nevertheless modest man and the outstanding tributes paid to his work more than a 100 years after his burial in an unmarked grave, would have probably amused him. This programme traces the development of his life and work and is copiously illustrated with examples of his music.

It was OK. I couldn't find much on Bach in audio. This was about the only thing. There were some interesting little stories of Bach's life. But, it certainly was a quick high level sweep. The alternation of music and narrative gave it a flavor for the period. Audio quality of the music was not high, but I was listening through a car adapter.

Stephen Dando-Collins paints a vivid and definitive portrait of daily life in the Tenth Legion as he follows Caesar and his men along the blood-soaked fringes of the Empire. This unprecedented regimental history reveals countless previously unknown details about Roman military practices, Caesar's conduct as a commander and his relationships with officers and legionnaires, and the daily routine and discipline of the Legion.

    "More than I expected."

This comment relates to part I and part II.

I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read much on ancient Rome so it definately increased my understanding of the legions, of Rome, and of the period in general. I purchased this book primarily because I was interested in learning more about daily life within and tactics of a legion (any legion). Besides interesting tidbits on the daily workings of a legion, the book gave a great historical context. I only expected it to cover the 10th. However,it not only discussed the 10th but, from what I could tell, most of the other legions.

The author did a great job of bringing back to life the individuals of that period. It's interesting to see how everything changes but nothing really changes.

  • Stormjammers: The Extraordinary Story of Electronic Warfare Operations in the Gulf War

Candid and fast-paced like the best combat memoirs, Stanek focuses on the men and women he flew with, telling their stories as well as his own and creating what is ultimately an inspiring and uplifting story of the human spirit challenged by the agony and terror of war.

Tammy says: "Top Notch book by a Top Notch author"
    "Neat Topic"
    Overall

It was an interesting topic. I haven't seen many stories on the EW side of things. I thought it was a good general story. It was nice that he included non-military and military aspects of what was going on. I'm happy that he and his wife stayed close. I would have enjoyed a litle more detail on the prosecution of particular signals.
