  • Why I Am a Buddhist: No-Nonsense Buddhism with Red Meat and Whiskey

There have been a lot of books that have made the case for Buddhism. What makes this book fresh and exciting is Asma's iconoclasm, irreverence, and hardheaded approach to the subject. He is distressed that much of what passes for Buddhism is really little more than "New Age mush." He loudly asserts that it is time to "take the California out of Buddhism." And he presents a spiritual practice that does not require a belief in creeds or dogma.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Storyteller to be better than the print version?

I never read the print version so I can't compare it with the audio edition. However, I have to say that I enjoyed this book tremendously. The voices were outstanding, the story was beyond compare. I learned a lot from this book as well.

What other book might you compare The Storyteller to and why?

    No comparisons.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The way they tied up all the loose ends at the end of the book was perfect.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I didn't laugh or cry just....ahhhh

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

What would have made The Art of Racing in the Rain better?

If it actually had something to do with a dog...

NO! Not the ones that are dog lovers, like me.

What about Christopher Evan Welch’s performance did you like?

the performance was actually very good. Good voices.

What character would you cut from The Art of Racing in the Rain?

    Denny

Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I did enjoy the book. Although at times my mind wandered because, well because it does, but I really didn't like the method in which sentences were put together. I was easy to understand but kind of choppy. The story was told well but not all that interesting. Kinda nerdy.

Would you recommend The Dog Stars to your friends? Why or why not?

    I wouldn't recommend it.

How could the performance have been better?

Too, monotone. The voices of the different people were easily identifiable, tho.

Did The Dog Stars inspire you to do anything?

    No

    Any additional comments?

    NO
