The ravaged continent of Genabackis has given birth to a terrifying new empire: the Pannion Domin. Like a tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Onearm’s army and Whiskeyjack’s Bridgeburners alongside their enemies of old - the forces of the Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii mages, and the Rhivi people of the plains. But ancient undead clans are also gathering; the T’lan Imass have risen.

Jacob says: "Really deep world and deeper mysteries."

What did you like best about this story?

The last 1/4 of the book is just insane. A rollercoaster of excitement. I've done ASoIaF, WoT, & First Law series, but this book tops them all.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The audiobook is very humorous. I even teared up a few times.

    Any additional comments?

Need the next audiobook available STAT.

Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favorite?

All of them. Shame this version wasn't available first. Steven Pacey narrates so significantly better than Michael Page it ain't even funny.

They burned her home. They stole her brother and sister. But vengeance is following. Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not a woman to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old step father Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own. And out in the lawless Far Country the past never stays buried.

What does Steven Pacey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Easily one of the best narrators. Really is a shame that Audible USA didn't release 'The Hereos' narrated by him.

The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate. Death. But it doesn't end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth. When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better writing. Every character seems to have no common sense. Over and over they are doing things most people would be smart enough to avoid.

Would you ever listen to anything by Z. A. Recht again?

No. This was the first audiobook out of the 70 or so I've purchased that I never finished.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was narrated rather well except for one or two characters.

Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

Howard says: "Great Military Science Fiction"
    "Epic space battles. Great Narration."
    Overall

All I can say is if you like space combat, this book may be for you. Just don't expect BSG type combat. This is considerably more realistic and slow compared to other SciFi combat. But just as exciting.

An author whose previous, wildly successful novels have earned him a reputation as fantasy's master of magic, Brandon Sanderson continues to dazzle audiences with this tale of princesses and gods. In this extraordinary world, those who attain glory return as gods. And those who can master the essence known as breath can perform the most wondrous miracles - or unleash the most devastating havoc.

Robert says: "What's Your god like?"
"Slow to start, but soon becomes epic."
    Overall

Don't expect plot speed like Mistborn. Otherwise a fantastic novel. Narration I would give a 3 out of 5. The narrator does tend to give most characters a ditsy sort of feeling.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Doesn't get much better than Michael Kramer when it comes to narration. Once again he does a fantastic job. The story is also about as good as it gets when it comes to fantasy.
