I wanted to like this, but the audio quality was terrible. Like listening to someone in a tunnel. Couldn't get very far through it :(

Michael Peterson was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, a candidate for mayor and a New York Times best-selling novelist. His wife Kathleen was the first woman ever admitted to the Duke University School of Engineering, a brilliant executive and a loving and fun-filled mother-the last woman who one would expect to become a victim in her own home.

The book is good, but the narrator's habit of ending sentences like they are a question really drives me nuts. For example: The written sentence may be "They drove to Durham for the holidays." and his narration is "They drove to Durham for the holidays?" This may seem like a little thing, but when it happens constantly out of context it gets VERY annoying.

  • Siesta Lane: A Cabin, No Running Water, and a Year Living Green

A poet at heart, Amy Minato rejects her life of consumption in Chicago to go back to nature - specifically, to a commune in Oregon, where she rediscovers herself. She also cops occasionally to the pretentiousness of her mission, and laughs along with the reader at her attempts to be both environmentally friendly and sane, considering the fact that she’s moved in with a bunch of strangers in a remote locale. Jan Muir, a relative of the great environmentalist John Muir, lends her beautiful black-and-white illustrations to the book.

It's a good enough book, but really saccharine. Which makes sense since the author is a poet and probably thinks a lot about words. My preference would have been a more direct writing style, but that's OK - it is her book :)'For SURE listen to the audio before you buy it - the narrator is super sweet sounding (not in a good way to me) and this just made the words sound more syrupy and in my opinion condescending. So if the sample annoys you - hours will drive you nuts! But If the story itself is what appeals to you - buy it to read.
