Island of the Blue Dolphins is the remarkable story of a strange and beautiful Indian girl who lives a serene and courageous life as the solitary survivor on an island off the California coast. Left behind when the rest of her tribe fled, she waits, year after year, for a ship to come for her. She fights for her very survival, building a shelter, hunting for food, and making weapons to stave off her enemies, the wild dogs who took her brother.

"Rich in cultural details and extremely well read."
    Overall

I believe this will be a longtime favorite for me and my girls, ages 9,7,and 4. We all love a theme which combines history, culture, and a unique story line. This has it all. The narrators voice (likely a native american) adds to the visualization of the island. Highly recommend it!

In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks. Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago.

What made the experience of listening to David and Goliath the most enjoyable?

Malcolm Gladwell is one of my favorite authors. I was waiting for this new release and found it to be on par with signature insights. I was disappointed that it's only 7 hours long. If felt short. As an undiagnosed dyslexic and parent of a dyslexic, I know first hand the power of determination. I see it in myself and my daughter. Overall a great read!

What was one of the most memorable moments of David and Goliath?

    Story of David and Goliath.

Have you listened to any of Malcolm Gladwell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoy his voice, inflection, and compassion.

The China Study offers conclusive evidence that a change of diet can dramatically reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The book is based on the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted, a 20-year joint project between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The study surveyed the eating habits of 6,500 adults from all over China and Taiwan and found a direct correlation between diet and disease.

    Story

The China Study is a provacative read providing compelling scientific evidence that we've gotten the Western diet all wrong. The story is well written and enjoyable to listen to, while telling us that we've been duped by the government into thinking that meat protein (meat, eggs, milk) are good for us, then once sick, we can turn to medical doctors untrained in nutrition and insented toward high cost ineffective procedures and pharmaceuticals. By living on plants alone we can avoid or even reverse cancer and heart disease. I must say that I am currently a near Atkins like protein eater with an aversion to carbohydrates. This new information flies in the face of what I thought to be true. As a trim 40-something, weight management has been my primary concern, thinking cancer is predestined based on family history and bad luck and being too young / healthy to be concerned for my heart health. Where the book falls short is in identifying a reasonable and tasty transition plan on how to adopt a plant based diet. As he also is against all oils, I'm at a loss as to how to prepare a full menu plentiful on a variety of foods, seasonings, and textures. It needs a follow on diet book or at least recommended reads as to who has it right.
