While the plot is good, Kay Scapetta's constant anger, resentmet, and certainty that she is at the center of everything that happens, turns a "must read" into a "have to finish". I am not sure what happened, but the Patricia Cornwall I used to love to read, seems to have vanished and left someone full of rag in her place. Really sorry to see her go.
I cannot believe that JG actually wrote this book. It is a puerile cliché. when I reached the part where Sam basically says no sex because "it's that time of the month", I was speechless. To top it off, he takes all of the VERY loose ends, and has Sam do a monologue in the last 1/2 chapter.
I really liked IQ84, but this book is slow and awkward. I was driving for six hours and this is all I had to listen to. Thought I would tear my hair out.
Penny's ability to build a plot, keep you in suspense, all while painting vivid and compelling pictures is brilliant !
this book reads like her early novels ... intriguing, balanced, holds your interest, plethora of characters ... holds your interest throughout
well worth the read ... each chapter builds ... with new elements woven into the main plot. don't read it if you like formula plots !
