Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

I can never get enough information on this period of history. I read his book in 1965 and liked it then but now so many years later I realise just how comprehensive his research was.
Of course living through this period as boy, I wondered why Germany and Japan took on the United States when we would have dragged our feet for many more years. Shirer covers all the bases and the fact that he was in Germany in those early years and observed the German people and the main players adds to the reading.
I like downloading books that I can go to over and over again and believe me this is one of them.

  • Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945

From one of our finest military historians comes a monumental work that shows us at once the truly global reach of World War II and its deeply personal consequences. Remarkably informed and wide-ranging, Inferno is both elegantly written and cogently argued. Above all, it is a new and essential understanding of one of the greatest and bloodiest events of the 20th century.

What made the experience of listening to Inferno the most enjoyable?

I'm a history buff and I'm always looking at the different angles of why it happened and how it happened. What would have happened if another step was made?

I like to write about the future and a good book can help me in understanding why certain things happen. In Spacestation, ARK, and my other books that I have written and writing, this book becomes a great reference point because it so thorough.

Germany almost won the war and with a little more time to develope some of their new weapons, would have. I just can't imagine what we would have done if he had V2 weapons that would have fallen on Boston or New York.

AS a sales person, it amazes me when a company can't see the writting on the wall. It was obvious to me in 2004 that Nextel was a dog and for that matter so was the Blackberry. The germans almost won the war but could you have imagined if they didn't make all those mistakes.

That's the kind of insight, I got from reading this book

What did you like best about this story?

It was well documented and yet added insight from a different perspective. Why did Hitler declare war on the United States?

What about Ralph Cosham’s performance did you like?

    Naturally, I liked his performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it it also a book that I will listen to many times over. To me, that's my criteria for rating a book

Would you listen to The Polish Officer again? Why?

Yes The historical perspective and motivations of the French. The book is well written and one is forced to go over certain parts.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Polish Officer?

The scenes and atmosphere in the jumbing off point of the German preparation for their invasion of England.

I love the love stories and how war can make us more noble and willing to sacrifice our wills

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    The story comes to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not the Polidh officier /but something to do with resistance.

    Any additional comments?

I almost didn't get into it. I started many times but the beginning just didn't take off.
I love to read about the war and wonder why the germans didn't win the war. This book gives me another view point.

The books human interations gives it the punch.

My grandparents came from Poland and my grandmother never liked it there. From what I read, they seem to have had poor leaders and one can sort of understand their patriotic will and their misteps.

At last, one of the world’s greatest works of science fiction is available - just as author Stanislaw Lem intended it. To mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Solaris, Audible, in cooperation with the Lem Estate, has commissioned a brand-new translation - complete for the first time, and the first ever directly from the original Polish to English. Beautifully narrated by Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica), Lem’s provocative novel comes alive for a new generation.

    Overall

I was fortunate enough to see the original Russian movie and now the newer version. I'm really surprised that more people haven't seen it.
I'm just trilled to hear the book's version, of course I love the interplay and the romantic interplay. I think it shows the complexity of human love and feelings whether its with a human or a pet, the unconditional giving part of love.
In this case, its also with a planet which on Earth we take it all for granted.
I do think and hope as we evolve so that our life span will be expanded. I guess we will learn that what goes around comes around. Unfortunately, it takes some time for that to happen.
This book was well written and easy to understand. As always I like audios that I can listen too over and over. Many lessons about are feelings can be learned from this audio.
