With this outrageous new novel, China Miéville has written one of the strangest, funniest, and flat-out scariest books you will read this—or any other—year. The London that comes to life in Kraken is a weird metropolis awash in secret currents of myth and magic, where criminals, police, cultists, and wizards are locked in a war to bring about—or prevent—the End of All Things.

Would you listen to Kraken again? Why?

    Yes. It's a blast. I'm sure I missed a lot.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kraken?

The opening chapter when we are introduced to China's vision of London was extraordinary.

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

John Lee constantly reminded me of the British-ness of the story. He was excellent.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There's a world out there you haven't yet seen.

Sir Richard Francis Burton and Algernon Charles Swinburne are sucked into the perilous depths of a moral and ethical vacuum when Lord Palmerston commissions Burton to investigate assaults on young women committed by a weird apparition known as Spring Heeled Jack - and to find out why werewolves are terrorizing London's East End.

Robert says: "Fun Steampunk but on the outlandish side"
    "By-the-numbers mash-up of S. Clarke and Mieville"

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you've already every good contemporary fantasy novel, such as anything by China Mieville, Susanna Clarke, or Richard K. Morgan, and you have to have something to read, and you hate re-reading, go ahead and read this one. It's a bad book but at least the writing is competent.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I wish more of China Mieville's work was Audibilized. In lieu of that, Martin Amis' new one looks good.

Did Gerard Doyle do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    Yes. He's an excellent narrator.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack?

If I were the editor I would have dropped the book entirely and saved all of us some time and grief.

    Any additional comments?

Mark Hodder, if he exists and is not a group of marketing experts, may end up being a good writer one day. He has decent style and some imagination. He needs to learn to tell a story, to really do the research, and not cater to small fan groups.

Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

    Eoin says: "Subtle Character Piece"
    "Well-written, well-read. This is a "little" book."

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, I enjoyed the book but I also didn't expect too much.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was satisfying but not particularly profound.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The challenge with this book is that nothing ever happened.

Was Among Others worth the listening time?

Listening to this was worth the time.
