Just a generation ago this place was called America. Now, after the worldwide implementation of UN-lead program called Agenda 21, it's simply known as the 'Republic'. There is no president. No congress. No Supreme Court. No freedom. There are only the Authorities. Citizens have two primary goals in the new Republic: to create clean energy and to create new human life. Those who cannot do either are of no use to society. This bleak and barren existence is all that 18-year-old Emmeline has ever known.

The story was engaging and I didn't want to put it down. It's a good story about what could happen in a Socialist type society when pushed to the extremes. What is interesting to listen to is the commentary at the end where the author discusses Agenda 21 and the ramifications he envisions if any or all parts are put into play. Some I agree with, some I disagree with. I have to admit my ignorance of such a summit and such a document. I just googled "Agenda 21" and downloaded the document. In these days where the World's current structure is collapsing all around us, it could be a good document to read and understand.

I'm going to review this book and the first in the series here. In the end, my opinion on both books are about the same. There's non stop action throughout the story but overall, it left me wanting more. Especially with the so called magic always present. I don't feel like there was much substance to it and if the sorcerer didn't have some sort of do-dad to perform his/her magic, then they couldn't do much of anything. Another thing that drove me nuts were the number of characters and the odd ball names. I could never keep track of some of the characters and I felt like the author had some list of off the wall names and attached one to everyone even if they had one role in the story and you never heard about them again. This was a long story and there was so much info repeated. I honestly could not wait for this book to be over and would have given up if I had not invested so much time in the story. I only picked up the second installment because I hoped it would pull the massive amount of information from the first story together. Lots of people got killed, that's about all that happened. I'm done with this series

Music has set the tone for most of Zoe Baxter’s life. And it’s music that brings her back to love. When fertility issues lead to a divorce, Zoe throws herself into her career as a music therapist. As an unexpected friendship with a woman slowly blossoms into love, she makes plans for a new life, but to her shock and inevitable rage, some people - even those she loves and trusts most - don’t want that to happen.

The book description falls short on the content of this book. Had I known how much Christian Evangelical content I would have to listen to and to a constant barrage of gay retoric I would have to endure, I would have returned this book had it not been for the fact I purchased it as part of a three for two credit deal and I was stuck with it. Neither the description given nor the sample eludes to a story of Gays vs Christian. I am neither Gay nor Christian and found the content irritating. While I congratulate Jody for her creative work adding music to the book, I found myself fast forwarding through the music because it was not my kind of music.

299 Days: The Preparation, the first audiobook in the 299 Days series, depicts the inner struggles Grant must face as he exists in a social system he recognizes as unsustainable and on the verge of collapse, but one in which he has built his life around. What begins as a return to his roots, self-sufficiency and independence, becomes a full blown move to prepare for what may come.

    Story

I'm actually writing a review for this entire series. I've been debating on how I should really rate this book and why I am giving it only three stars. After reading the first three in this series, I was totally sucked in and I decided I would commit 10 credits to listen to the entire series. If I had stopped at this point, I would have given it four and maybe even five stars. I could relate to what was going on and could believe that this is how it could go down with a collapse of our economic system and government. I am a believer that the system is failing and will continue to fail. It also made me think that it is time to start preparing for the worst. However, once I got into book four, I found the author repetitive and unnecessarily verbose and I found myself saying 'come on, get on with it'. I think many hours could have been chopped off with some better editing. There are over 92 hours of story here and I think the whole story could have been told in 30 hours with better editing. In fact I would have put up with the extremely conservative point of view presented in this story. I am not a die hard liberal but I was offended by how liberals were portrayed as ignorant and the conservatives as the only ones with brains in their heads. I also think the narrator got bored with the story because I found his narration to become monotone and slower especially by book 7 through 9. By 10, his narration improved but I'm not even going to finish the book because the hard core conservative point of view and the endless stories for each of the Colonels is really not necessary to get the author's point of view across.

All I can say is if you decide you really want to listen to this book, be sure increase the playback speed to as fast as you can handle it. Even though Scott Brick does a flawless job of narration, his over dramatic tendencies drug this story out even longer than needed. On top of the fact this story could have been edited down by half. I wanted to start pulling my hair out by the 10th hour. Harlan Coben is a wonderful storyteller and there was evidence of his skill although his immaturity as a writer showed through. He gives us fair warning to not read this book if this was your first book written by him. That's a pretty good indication of what you can expect from the story. Whether this is your first or tenth Coben book, I would suggest you heed the advice of the other reviewers before dropping the credit. Overall, the book is filled with beautiful people who are supposed to be smart but doing stupid things. Throughout the book expect to get inundated with the most beautiful women in existence and men stumbling around them with their tongues hanging out. There are also a good many people doing evil and underhanded things which, in the end will turn out to be worthless and totally without common sense. I don't know why I punished myself through 17 hours of torture. I only wished I realized sooner, rather than 12 hours in to the story I could speed up my playback.

The narrator was irritating - totally lackluster and drab. Good thing I bought it on a two for one deal. I would definitely returned it if I had used a whole credit.

I almost returned this book after the first hour because the bouncing around between characters and their stories was a little frustrating. When the separate stories began to converge, I decided it would be worth hanging in there and seeing what happened. I'm glad I did. It's been a long time since a book has moved me to tears of happiness. Worth the credit

Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name.

One of my writing instructions said "can you smell, taste, and feel what you have written"? This statement says everything about what James Lee Burke is all about. In this story no character is left untouched and you get to know each of their personalities, their deepest, darkest secrets. You can feel the despair hidden below the surface and the events in their lives that have formed the fabric of their being. The story moves slowly and anything more than eight hours could have forced me to put this book down except I enjoyed the author's ability to show me who the characters are. Will Patton, is the perfect match for James Lee Burke's stories, with his slow southern drawl and expressive narration. I won't get into the story line because it is something you need to experience yourself. What I will say is the last two hours of the story will hold you and have you at the edge of your seat and know that all of the storytelling leading to the end makes this story complete and with out question of why any of the characters did what they did.

Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut on a mountain in Nepal. Though she is desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures, like playing hopscotch with her best friend from school and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

This is a story about young girls, barely out of puberty who are thrust into a world of sexual and physical abuse by both their handlers and customers. Their parents, desperate for money and often with hopes they are sending their children off into the world often do not know they have been duped and their children are headed into an unspeakable existence. People do evil things in the world all in pursuit of lining their pockets. It's a sad state of affairs where young children are sold into prostitution. I want to shame all of those people out there who have no qualms about supporting the industry of child prostitution.
