The world's biggest supercollider is locked in an Arizona mountain. The Torus was built to unlock the secrets of the very moment of creation: the Big Bang itself. Will the Torus divulge the mysteries of the creation of the universe? Or will it, as some predict, suck the earth into a mini black hole? Or is the Torus a Satanic attempt, as a powerful televangelist decries, to challenge God Almighty on the very throne of heaven?

    Overall

I enjoy the pace and passion of this book. I agree with a few other reviewers that the characters are exaggerated for effect and could have been less stereotypical. However; this is entertainment, not a social commentary on the human condition. I have to give it a 5 as well to offset those who don't seem to get that. The over the top portrayal of the evangelist and real fears that the future is not covered in their "book" must hit to close to the bone for christo fascists. I can't believe someone actually thinks that scientist "try to disprove the bible". I think you have a twisted sense of your beliefs and absolutely no idea about real science. I bet these are the same people who think there is actually a debate with science and so called "intelligent design" and don't recognize that 0.01% of the fringe are being given 50% of the coverage by a sensationalist media. I am a scientist. Scientific method has everything to do with the physical world around us and nothing to do with the spiritual one. They are not mutually exclusive. Get over it and enjoy a good story.

As war continues to rage between the Alliance and Syndicate Worlds, Captain "Black Jack" Geary is promoted to admiral - even though the ruling council fears he may stage a military coup. His new rank gives him the authority to negotiate with the Syndics, who have suffered tremendous losses and may finally be willing to end the war. But an even greater alien threat lurks on the far side of the Syndic occupied space.

Jeffrey says: "This is a great series"
    "A little disappointing"
    Overall

In "Victorious" Campbell struggles with both plot and character. I was looking forward to the final installment (it was an interesting set up) and did enjoy significant parts of the story including the narration but parts disappointed me as well. I found that plot turns were not really twists as they were all too predictable and I waited impatiently for the characters to plod through in the storyline -previous installments in the series seemingly had more clever delivery. Also, the character development in this installment, particularly the romantic relationship, bordered on intolerable. The dialogue becomes inane and repetitive and is almost space filler and I found it distracting from the framework of a really good story. The relationship belonged there; it was just way overdone and melodramatic. This is a little disappointing for a last installment. I really do hope though that the author follow up with a better effort and more on the enigma race and Geary. He is a wonderful character and this is a great sci-fi series.

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

"Diatribe does not equal good story"
    Overall

MC ruins his record with this arguably biased diatribe … to save arguments one way or the other lets just say what most people looking for reviews want to hear. The book masquerades as a Crichton adventure/techno novel but quickly breaks down into a soap box speech and dialogue completely out of context. It is as if Crichton wanted to write an opinion to Science, Nature or PNAS and instead stuffed it into a book, segmented it, and put chapters of text around it. I didn’t get this book for a lecture on global warming or not. I go to the primary literature for that. Dr Crichton is an intelligent man but a physician and not a scientist. He has done some reading and he wants to share … great, research is one thing but pages of opinion dully espoused by a smarmy character is too much.
PUT IT IN SOME NON FICTION OR PEER REVIEWED JOURNAL.
