Kemal, scion of one of the city's wealthiest families, is about to become engaged to Sibel, daughter of another prominent family, when he encounters F├╝sun, a beautiful shopgirl and a distant relation. Once the long-lost cousins violate the code of virginity, a rift begins to open between Kemal and the world of the Westernized Istanbul bourgeosie - a world, as he lovingly describes it, with opulent parties and clubs, society gossip, picnics, and mansions on the Bosphorus, infused with the melancholy of decay.

    "Pathetic character and storyline"

This is my first review on audible, although I have listened to over 30 books. I feel the need to warn other readers about how boring and pathetic the main character is in this book. The whole story surrounds him whining and complaining about lost love from a pre-marital affair. He ruins his own marriage and refused to give up on his mistress even after she moves on and gets married. I could not finish the book because it just kept dragging on with no end in sight. I was excited to read another book by Orhan Pamuk and to "revisit" Istanbul after going there on my own honeymoon but this one was a real waste of my credits.

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

    Story

Having read many reviews of this book, I knew the beginning would be a little slow but I was determined to stick through it and get the benefit that so many others raved about having done the same.. Well I made it part way through the 3rd download and jjust couldn't do it anymore. The story seemed to go no where, except maybe in circles, I was bored, uninterested and finally gave up. Save your money for something better

This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

    Story

I am now on my third time listening and I love it as much as the first. the narration is outstanding and even though I just received the paper version as a gift, I can't imagine reading the story without the voices and pacing given by Humphrey Bower. There are so many little moments in the story, so many reflections by the author, that make this story a must read, and re-read and re-read again.

In this extraordinary novel, Karen Maitland delivers a dazzling reinterpretation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, an ingenious alchemy of history, mystery, and powerful human drama. Magical, heart-quickening, and raw, Company of Liars is a work of vaulting imagination from a powerful new voice in historical fiction.

    Roxanne says: "Wonderful story..."
    "No real plot"
    Overall

This was one of the strangest books I have ever read. Unless I missed something major in the beginning, the story essentially seems to have no real plot. It is about a group of travelers that end up banding together and mysteriously killing each other (or being killed by other means) but there is no real reason for the travel or the murders and although there is a twist at the end, all I felt like saying was SO WHAT! It felt like one of those long rambling stories told by a child that just kept going on but never really got anywhere. The only reason why I listened to the whole thing was in hopes of something finally happening at the end to pull it all together but alas, no such luck.
